S: Salt Lake City
FC: Shots of Salt Lake City
Another trip, another city to view through the cell phone camera. SLC is a nice mid-sized with some metro feel and some rural feel. The capital of Utah so, the capitol building is one of the standouts in this city.
Of course, this is what Salt Lake City is best known for and it is a very beautiful structure. Unfortunately, you and I and any other non-Morman can not get inside.
The angel Moroni is far above on the highest steeple. The Gothic architecture is well represented on this building.
The home of the Morman Tabernacle Choir and this most awesome organ. | One of the taller buildings in town is the office of the Church of the Latter Day Saints.
Seems like most other churches in town have building envy but they give it a great shot and are good looking too.
Snow capped mountains are a familiar backdrop for many directions in this city. | Wells Fargo is the biggest building in this picture with the copper topped building called Utah Place.
Salt Lake has weathered the economic downturn better than most and it is one of the few cities that I travel to that still has cranes in the air. The white building in the background is a hotel called Grand America. It is the only 5 star hotel in town and needed to be built to meet one of the standards to attract the Olympics back in 2002.
Designed as a replica of the nations capitol, this one sits atop a hill overlooking downtown and is impressive as you drive up the hill to it.
I guess they are proud of their bees so they nicknamed the whole thing the beehive state.
Pretty stellar views | from the outside | ...
 ... and the inside
How would you like to stand at this podium and argue your case in front of the five Supreme Court Justices for the State of Utah?
Great mural paintings around the rotunda and the chandelier was easily one hundred years old and hung from the top center which was a looong way down.
These four statues are at the base of where the rotunda reaches the ground and signify the strengths of the Utah people. (you can see one at the bottom of the bottom picture on the previous page).
Tour groups and wedding shots all at the same time. This will also give you some context as to the size of the statues and the building itself.
There are four separate buildings on the complex with the fountain at the left in the center. It is like most capitol grounds and very well kept and quite pretty, especially with mountains in the background.
This monument is to the Mormon people for their pilgrimage to Utah. It is made of granite and bronze and is very fitting for a capitol grounds.
Like most bigger cities, it is not without it's tough spots. This was only a couple blocks from downtown hotels and businesses.
How many Salt Lake Citians does it take to watch one guy work? Perhaps they can go to work at the LDS headquarters with its cool engraved building or huge temple.
Not exactly the busiest downtown but a bit refreshing when compared to NYC. Uh-oh, lookout, a piece of litter...Some fine upstanding worker from across the street will snap that up...in an hour or so...if it doesn't blow away first...or one of his buddies will if he can break away from the hard duty.
