29: Napoleon Had this Arc commissioned to commemorate his victory at the battle of Austerlitz. Climb 284 steps to the observation deck on top showing beautiful panoramic views of the city
32: Notre-Dame Cathedral dedicated to "Our Lady" (Mary, the Mother of Jesus)
34: Mary, the mother of God, is seen cradling him in the heart of the facade of this church. Below the circular center window are the 28 King of Judah.
35: Central Portal depicting the end of the world with Christ sitting on the throne of judgment, Beneath him are an angel and a demon weighing souls in the balance.
39: Notre-Dame's famous gargoyles represent souls caught between heaven and earth. They also function as rainspouts (from the same French root as "gargle") when there are no evil spirits to battle.
40: Sainte-Chapelle - Fait lux "let there be light." This 13th century chapel was built to house Jesus' Crown of Thorns (now housed at Notre-Dame) . It features 15 separate panels of stained glass (6,500 feet) depicting scenes from the Creation to Judgment Day. Built speedily between 1242 and 1248 for King Louis IX.
44: Post WWI "Lost Generation" American, Sylvia Beach opened Shakespeare and Co. Bookstore. It became a meeting place for writers like Ernest Hemingway, James, Joyce, and George Bernard Shaw.
