The statue is one a three made by an Italian sculptor Guido Galletti, and was donated to John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park in 1966. This 9-foot bronze statue of Christ is a replica of the original, Christ of the Abysses, off the Italian shore. It rests 25 feet from the surface of water, on top of a three tiered concrete pedestal. The surrounding reef is known for large formations of brain coral, and for the nearly 200 underwater weddings that take place here every year. Beware the fish, especially the barracuda, who have become accustomed to human presence.
9: Key Largo Grecian Rock Grecian Rocks is shaped like a half circle. It covers an area about half a mile long. The GPS coordinates are 25'06.771N and 080'18.312W, about 3/4 of a mile south-southwest of the Christ of the Deep. This reef is inshore from the other reefs in this area, but it has the same formations as the fore reef that is offshore in the deeper water. It has beautiful spur and groove coral formations that are covered with colorful corals and sponges. The crest of the reef is lined with fingers of elkhorn coral and colorful tropical fish. There are areas where the reef is totally out of the water at low tide.
