Inadequate Food and Drinking Water | Major Issues | Many people in Southern Sudan either have no means of growing their own food or systematically starved by the government. Water is Scarce and there is a lot of waterborne diseases | Medical Care | Because of the poor quality of water in Sudan water borne disease is frequent. However, medical care is undermanned and underfunded leaving the hospitals highly inneffective | Ethnic Violence | Over the years ethnic violence has remained prominent in Sudan. The mostly Arab northern Sudanese have persecuted the Southern Sudanese that comprise of many different ethnic backgrounds other than Islamic.

 Samir's Hut

 Warab | Samir's Room

Samir’s family is poor as far as Sudanese go and Sudan is among the poorest nations in the world. None of Samir’s immediate family are educated and he, too, has never been to school. Instead, he works with his family on the farm, looking after the cattle and family crops. Life is hard since water is scarce and when we do get it, it is often polluted and not safe to drink. Since the water is short in supply it is difficult to grow crops and harvest is never bountiful. Thus, meals are few and far between. But they make do and so will I while I’m here. Hope everything is safe at home. Sincerely Richie | Dear Mom and Dad, I made it safely to Warab. My host family is nice enough. Edgard and Mariam are the mother and father and they have a son about 10 years old and a daughter around 8 named Samir and Crystal

 Medical Care

Dear Mom and Dad This past week, disease spread in our village. The water is polluted and many people have taken ill. Crystal, Samir’s sister has come down with the illness and the rest of the family and I are at a loss for what to do. We want to help, but are afraid to catch the disease ourselves. Two days ago Samir’s father and I took Crystal to the hospital and we didn’t get home until this afternoon. The line at the hospital was enormous because there is only two doctors in the whole village. During times like these many families suffer many hardships, but the family assures me we will pull together as a village. Sincerely Richie

Ethnic Violence | Dear Mom and Dad Things are getting worse. Arab militias are rumored to be headed toward our village and many people are scared. They do not want to fight but many in the village are preparing for the possibility getting together the strongest men in the village. However as of now we can only wait pray that they do not come across our village, for Samir tells me ‘they are said to rape the women and pillage the fields before enslaving the fittest of the men. But the worst fate of all falls upon the weak and old.’ However, the prospect of rebellion and equality in Sudan gives hope to all those experiencing what they are here in Warab. I’ll write to you when I can. Sincerely Richie

Works Cited Falafel. N.d. http://www.jerusalemrestaurant.com/JERUSALEMRest2/Falafel/ IMAG001.GIF. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This picture depicts a plate of falafels. These are fried balls of either meat or vegetables and while found in Sudan can also be found in many parts of the Middle East. It is frequent however for Sudanese because it is so inexpensive to make and very filling. GOSS Coat of Arms. N.d. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/el/1/1a/ Sudan_coat_of_arms.png. Wikipedia, n.d. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This picture is of the coat of arms of the Southern Sudanese Government. While it is greatly similar to that of the Sudan it gives the people of the South something to show that they are different from those in the North. Run down village. N.d. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/. N.p., n.d. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This picture shows a village that is in shambles. The mud and stick huts have born thrown around by the wind and the people of this village will have no shelter from the sun or rain until their homes are finally fixed. Sudanese Box Pendant. N.d. Jewelry. This image depicts a piece of jewelry that would be customarily worn in Sudan. Notice that the materials are cheap and there is no gold or silver in the jewelry. This attests to the fact that Sudan is one of the poorest nations in the world. Sudanese Clothing. N.d. http://www.worldrider.com/blog/photos/IMG_5877_2.jpg. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . N.d. http://www.samaritanspurse.ca/images/ headers/tall/tall_407.jpg. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . As my title insinuates this picutre is of a Sudanese doctor checking up on a patient. Unfortunately, this is a rare sight in Sudan where the hospitals are undermanned and underfunded. As such many people die every day from disease in the water and air. Sudanese Flag. N.d. http://equity.swsi.wikispaces.net/Harmony+Day. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Jan. 2011. . This is an image of the Sudanese flag. I used it on my cover as information about Sudan and as an image to locate a link that would bring you to the Sudanese Interim Constitution. Sudanese Pounds. N.d. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudanese_Pound. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This image depicts the national currency for Sudan, the Sudanese pound. These coins are inscribed in Sudanese but the banknotes, or bills, have both English and Sudanese on them. Sudanese Soldier. N.d. http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Society/Pix/ pictures/2010/4/8/1270736676017. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This picure depicts a man with an automatic machine gun over his back. The photograph represents the violence that is happening right now in Sudan. People of the same country are killing each other over religion and it has to stop or things will worsen. Sudanese Soldiers in Camo. N.d. http://foreignpolicyblogs.com/ wp-signup.php?new=sudan. Web. 6 Jan. 2011. . This photograph is of a few men wearing camoflouge and brandishing guns. This again attests to the violence that is still on going in Sudan. When people of the same country take arms against each other, things can't end well.
