BC: On to Italy

1: Life brings simple pleasures to us every day. It is up to us to make them wonderful memories. CathyAllen | Today we started our bus journey to Switzerland. We were able to stop in Luzern Switzerland to do a quick walk through. This town is beautiful. It doesn't have the mountains Adelboden has, but it's on the water so that helps out. There is a famous water tower that dates back to 1333. The foot bridge through the town is also very famous, but the middle section was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it a few years ago. We stopped at the Jesuit church. (A baroque style church) A beautiful church. It differs greatly from the gothic style church was saw in Strasbourg. We stopped to have a glass of Hot Swiss Chocolate before continuing our journey to Adelboden. I had a little trouble with the drive. I felt nauseas, but we eventually made it. The drive is just absolutely breathtaking. It's just so disappointing to know these pictures just won't do it justice. When we arrived, we did our usual stroll through the city. We stopped to buy knives and postcards. I even bought another sweatshirt. We talked about the arch that was built in thanks for Adelboden's aide of US soldiers during WWII. They took in many US Soldiers who could make it across the border until the war ended. The US built the arch as a sign of thanks. After the stroll through the city, Aunt Mary and I ate BBQ pork steak, bread, and wonderful tomato soup in the hotel's bar. It was very good. I plan to take it easy tonight and just enjoy the view from my room. Rob and his EDW buds apparently drew the lucky straw. They had the presidential suite in the AWESOME hotel. It was different from the one we stayed at last time. Its a spa resort and the rooms and just the hotel itself is just really remarkable. Tomorrow we will be going up the mountain to the top of the water fall. Its just so beautiful. | Thursday June 11, 2009

2: Bertel Thorvaldsen's famous carving of a dying lion (the Lion Monument, or Lwendenkmal) is found in a small park just off Lowenplatz. The carving commemorates the hundreds of Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when the mob stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris. | Luzern, Switzerland

6: The cornerstone was laid in 1666, but the church was not complete until 1893. Jesuit Church is the first large baroque church in Switzerland.

8: Chapel Bridge is a 670 ft. long bridge crossing the Reuss River. It's the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. It was constructed in 1333. The paintings were done in the 17th century depicting events from the cities history. Much of the bridge was destroyed by fire in 1993.

28: The Engstligenalp is the biggest plateau of the western Swiss Alps. It lies south of Adelboden on 1900 - 2000 m above sea level. Since 1996 it belongs to the Swiss culture landscapes of national importance.

55: Birthday Wishes | We woke up this morning and had breakfast at the hotel. We bussed to the lift, and took the lift to the top of Engstligenalp. It was still as beautiful as I remember. We actually hiked to the beginning of the water fall. We took a lot of pictures, but it was just a wonderful new experience. While walking to the restaurant, a native started playing the alpine horn high over us. It was just so neat. The horn definitely projects. It was a nice treat. We all had our hot chocolates and some even had tomato soup. Rob wasn't feeling well this morning, but we made it go up the lift. I don't think he regretted it. We took the lift back down the mountain as a group, but them some of us hiked back to the bottom of the water fall. This too was new for me. That was really neat to see all that water first hand. It was a treat. We headed back to town and actually was able to enjoy the natives market day. They had vendors in the streets selling all sorts of items. I also picked up a few more army knives as extra gifts. I took it easy during the early evening. Aunt Mary and I went stroll through the streets ones last time. She had dinner in the hotel, but I opted not to eat. I think the rest of the evening will just be getting ready for tomorrow's travels.

58: Susten Pass, Switzerland

59: Saturday June 13, 2009

60: One the road again. We rode through the Susten Pass to get into Italy. We stopped at a little service station/coop for lunch. I had a ham sandwich. I saw my first Europe Dr. Pepper but I already bought a Coke.
