 AUSTRALIA | ARRIVED 21 DEC 2011 | Scale Factor and Proportional Reasoning
 Scale Factor- a number by how much a figure is dilated (made bigger or smaller). Proportional Reasoning- Equation stating two rations are equal(fraction). | Definition
 DEPARTED | AUSTRALIA | 2 FEB 2012 | Word Problem The dimensions of the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas are 350 ft high with a square base width of 646 ft. and a pyramid in Egypt is twice as big, by how much did the perimeter, area, and volume change by?
 Perimeter? | The Perimeter is the scale factor to the power of 1 so 2 to the 1st power would stay 2
 Area? | The area is the scale factor to the power of 2. 2^2 or 2 x 2
 Volume? | The volume is the scale factor to the third power. 2^3 or 2 x 2 x 2
 SYDNEY TOWER | is Sydney's tallest free-standing structure, and the second tallest in Australia (with the Q1 building on the Gold Coast being the tallest). It is also the second tallest observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere (after Auckland's Sky Tower, though Sydney Tower Eye's main observation deck is almost 50 m (164 ft) higher than that of Auckland's Sky Tower). The Sydney Tower is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. | Ashley is driving at a constant speed, after 3 hours she drives 150 miles, how many miles does she drive after 12 hours?
 Proportional reasoning | 1st Step | Start with a ratio (fraction) and have hours over miles to create an equivalent proportion, 3 over 150 and 12 over x | 3 12 ___ = ____ 150 X
 2nd Step | Solve the proportion (cross multiply) | 3 12 ___ = ____ 150 X
 Multiply 150 x 12 = 1,800 Then multiply 3 and X to get 3X
 3rd Step | Divide the product by the other numerator (1,800 / 3) Which equals 600 | Then Divide 3X by 3 and that cancels out to leave X by itself.
 12 * 150 = 1,800 1,800 / 3 = 600 3X / 3 = X | Answer- In 12 hours ---> 600 miles (in 12 hours she will drive 600 miles)
 Proportional Reasoning | Word Problem | Ashely stopped at a restaurant and the waiter told her they used 24oz. of tomato sauce to make 4 pizzas. If they use the same amount on each pizza, how many oz. of tomato sauce will they use making 168 pizzas?
 1st Step | For your ratio, put oz. over pizzas. | O = Oz. P = Pizza | O 24 X ___ ____ = ____ P 4 168
 2nd Step | 24 X ___ = ___ 4 168 | Cross Multiply | 24 x 168 = 4,032 4 times X = 4X
 3rd Step | 24 1,008 ___ = _____ 4 168 | You divide the product by the other numerator. | 4,032 / 4 = 1,008 4X / 4 = X (the 4's cancel out) | Answer- 168 pizzas ---> 1,008 oz. of tomato sauce
 officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent as well as the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighboring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east. | AUSTRALIA
