13: To Whom It May Concern: During February, Shelly Thompson organized a Sweetheart Dance for Capps Middle School. The unique thing about sponsoring this dance was that she helped the students complete their own vision. As the FCCLA sponsor at Capps, Shelly’s leadership students asked her if she would assist them in starting a new tradition at school. They wanted to host our first semi-formal in almost ten years. The students had a vision of a sophisticated dance with full decorations, beautiful dresses, and proper etiquette. Shelly, believing in her students, decided to approach the administrative team with the idea, hoping to get approval for a night dance for her kids. We, of course, agreed to try it out. Over the next month and a half, Shelly worked diligently with her students to secure adult chaperones including some of our parents. It was the first time we had really opened up supervision to our community. Shelly also organized all of the advertising, selling of tickets, decorations, refreshments, and music. It was truly a leadership project. Overall the dance was a huge success and a great learning experience for Shelly’s leadership students. Even larger than impacting her own students, Shelly impacted the entire school by offering an event that many of our students would not have been able to experience without the school intervening. Thank you, Diana E. Lebsack Principal
