S: Old Dominion University Monarch Dining 2010 - 2011

1: A Year In Review | 2010-2011

2: Congratulations to Amanda Geisaka, the winner of Monarch Dining’s Yearbook Contest. Amanda won a $250 Village Bookstore gift card and her winning design was featured as a mural in Café 1201. | Monarch Dining Yearbook Contest | Ten students submitted their design for the 2010-2011 Monarch Dining Yearbook cover. ODU students, faculty, and staff had the opportunity to vote for their favorite designs, as they were displayed outside the Café 1201 entrance.

3: First Drink Fridays | Throughout the school year, the Health Center partnered with different university departments for “TGI Friday Mocktails”. Every other Friday in the South Mall of Webb Center, that Friday’s featured department distributed samples of a mixed, non-alcoholic beverage. As departments distribute the beverage, they share information about the negative effects of alcohol as it specifically relates to their department.

4: Move In Day | District residents and their families enjoyed grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and lemonade as they settled into their new apartments on August 26th

5: On August 29th, Monarch Dining treated parents and students with refreshing Raising Cane's lemonade along with Einstein Bros. Bagels samples as they moved into their dorms.

6: Main Street | MainStreet kicked off on Thursday, September 9th on Kaufman Mall/Lawn from 11am-2pm. Dining Services was among many university departments and campus organizations representing their services. Hundreds of students enjoyed pizza, cotton candy, and snow cones as they gathered information about organizations of interest. | The Chick-fil-A Cow was a fiery hit as he handed out Spicy Chicken samples and coupons for a free spicy chicken sandwich. Over 100 lucky students enjoyed a spicy chicken sandwich courtesy of Monarch Dining. | The Dining Services marketing team distributed Meal Plan information and signed students up for the loyalty program, Jam Rewards. Giveaways included footballs, koozies, water bottles, and frisbees!

7: It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time! | Throughout the year, Monarch Dining teamed up with ODU departments to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to benefit the Norfolk Community. | Tuesday, September 14th: The Center for Service & Civic Engagement and Monarch Dining | Tuesday, November 16th: Student Activities Council and Monarch Dining | Many students stopped by during Activity Hour in the Webb Center to prepare sandwiches for those less fortunate. Approximately 400 sandwiches were made in total and all were donated to the Union Mission Ministries. Monarch Dining was honored to help in both these events by donating everything needed to make these delicious sandwiches!

8: Christmas Depot | On December 20, Monarch Dining employees volunteered at the Salvation Army’s “Christmas Depot” event. Parents came to the Christmas Depot to select and bring home gifts for their children, which were from the Angel Tree and Toys for Tots programs. | Monarch Dining helped transform an empty warehouse into a Christmas wonderland!

10: Raising Cane's Grand Opening | ODU student, Loc Tran, won free Cane's for a year by being our first customer!

11: On Tuesday, January 11 Monarch Dining was honored to have special guests President John Broderick and Vice President Bob Fenning speak at the event and to partake in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. | Raising Cane's is the first in the Hampton Roads area! | The “launch party” also included a DJ, an appearance by Capital One’s Mascot Champion – Big Blue, prize giveaways, and a flash mob.

15: With the first day of business on January 8, the P.O.D. Market - Village is the second location at ODU. Grand Opening week, January 17-January 24, included vendor sampling, giveaways, and beach cruiser drawings. | Sampling!

16: Extreme Make Over: Home Edition January 20 - February 5 Monarch Dining was excited to help the Hampton Roads community beat the show's previous record for pounds of food collected by donating an entire pallet of cans. The pallet consisted of 4,800 Cambell’s Soup cans and other canned donations by Monarch Dining Employees! All of the donations benefited the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Monarch Dining employees were thrilled to help the Hampton Roads community set the new record! | Extreme Food Drive | Ms. Anita Washington (Chick-fil-A Supervisor) won a $50 gift card as Monarch Dining’s Extreme Food Drive Employee Competition winner!

17: Get Naked | The “Wellness Wave” program ODU's Virginia Beach Higher Education Center The program was a collaborative effort between Recreation and Wellness and the Higher-Ed Center. Every month, a one-hour fitness class was offered to students, faculty and staff for free! They had lessons in yoga, zumba, pilates, jazzercise, cardio, strength, and stretch. | In March, Monarch Dining supported healthy lifestyles by providing free Naked Juice vouchers at Waves Express. | A wellness education table provided related information, free giveaways, and free blood pressure readings.

18: Monarch Dining and Kellogg’s teamed up with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, Kellogg’s and Tony the Tiger to continue fighting hunger in the Hampton Roads area. “Share Your Bowl” is a program in which every bowl of cereal that students, faculty, and staff members eat in the dining halls, a matching bowl equivalent will be donated to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. The program officially began on March 22 in Café 1201 where there were games and free giveaways. Monarch Dining successfully reached the goal of 1,600 bowls! | Share Your Bowl

20: 40 individuals pledged their support to local farmers and the farm market through subscription to purchase local produce. Every Friday evening in Webb Center, Monarch Dining hosts a CSA social. This gives members an opportunity to pick up their produce and mingle with other community members. Adult beverages and appetizers featuring a produce item are served for everyone to enjoy! | Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

21: Monarch Dining participated in ARAMARK’s Mid-Atlantic Guest Chef Program! Selected chefs visit another ARAMARK account to experience the perspective of another location. Guest chefs work with the home university's chef to feature a special entrée. Both events were huge successes! | Guess What? Guest Chef | February 23rd Chef Greg Carter, Frostburg State Univeristy, Exec. Chef Visited Old Dominion University Risotto which included an assortment of fresh vegetables, chicken, shrimp, and parmesan cheese | February 16th Chef Lyle Brinn: Monarch Dining, Sous Chef Visited Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio Mustard Encrusted Porkloin with Gouda and Pancetta Macaroni and Cheese

22: Popper Toss

23: On April 19, 2011, students competed in the Einsteins Bros. Bagels Popper Toss scoring vouchers for free bagels, sandwiches and more!

24: Guest Restaurant Night | Each restaurant featured cuisine from different nations! Rom-Thai - Thailand Montego Caribbean - Caribbean Islands Ellen’s BBQ Express - West Africa Del-Vecchios - Italy

25: Monarch Dining worked with the Office of Intercultural Relations (OIR) to invite student organizations to sponsor a table with information representing their featured culture. | April 27th ~Café 1201~ | Thai Association, African Caribbean Association (ACA), and the F.O.R.E.I.G.N.E.R.S. interacted with students and encouraged them to try all of the different food options available.

26: On April 21, Monarch Dining had a food festival during the Vendor’s Fair. Free, local and organic products were distributed for people to try. Also during the Vendor’s Fair, Monarch Dining had an information table containing a display board showing how we have gone green, ARAMARK’s “Pledge to Go Green” (which people received a free “Drink to the Earth” canister if signed), and energy and water conservation tips.

27: On April 30, 17 Monarch Dining employees participated in the 2nd Annual ARAMARK/FRIENDS Association Health and Wellness Fair for Children. Monarch Dining was responsible for the Physical Fitness Zone, which had many stations: moon bounce, basketball, corn hole, jump rope, sack race, and face painting. Children would collect tickets at each station for participating and redeemed them for prizes donated by Monarch Dining vendors. | Health Fair

28: On April 28, Monarch Dining allowed students to donate up to five meal swipes, by visiting the Card Center during business hours. On May 12, Monarch Dining delivered approximately 300 meals to the Union Mission on Virginia Beach Boulevard. | A total of 14,482 meal swipes were donated by ODU students! Monarch Dining delivered approximately 1,000 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia, located here in Norfolk, VA. The food bank was very grateful for the donations. | Food Donations | Meal Swipe Donations

29: Rock and Wrap It Up! | The Rock and Wrap program is a partnership between Global Spectrum, Aramark, OSAL, and the Union Mission. Each night after an event, Aramark packages all unused food for that event so that it can be transported to the Union Mission. 2,759 meals have been donated since starting in mid-January. | To help the Japan Relief efforts, Monarch Dining had donation boxes at all locations. In just one week, a total of $700 was collected and donated to Save the Children. | Japan Relief

31: Throughout the school year, the All-You-Care-To-Eat dining locations held various theme meals. From the decorations right down to the special menu items, students were able to enjoy a break in their everyday dining routines by attending one of these fun theme meals. | Theme Meals
