S: Karl Gauss

BC: This book contains information about Karl Gauss. He was a great mathematician. He played an important role in math.

FC: Karl Gauss

1: Karl Gauss was born in 1777 in Germany. He made up a way to sum the integers between 1 to 100 by 1 + 100 = 101, 2 + 99 = 101.. and so on. He had found a way to add up an arithmetical series.

2: Later he earned a scholarship and discovered many theorems. It happened in 1796. He proved that any polygon can be constructed by a ruler and compass.

4: Gauss was the first to prove the fundamental theorem of algebra. He proved this in four different ways during his lifetime. | With the number theory, he helped a lot. He had a book called Disquisitiones Arithmeticae. This book contained the first proof of the law of quadratic reciprocity.

7: Gauss did not believe that mathematics was important enough to deserve support. This is when he was wanting to have a position in astronomy. He was professor of astronomy in 1807.

8: Gauss began working on the motion of celestial bodies in 1809. He also introduced the gaussian gravitational constant. Among all this he also looked through the measurement of least squares. Scientists use this today to minimize the impact of measurement error. He said he was using this method since 1795.

10: He discovered, but never published, the non-Euclidean geometry. His friend tried this method many times but always failed. His son rediscovered this in 1820. Later, he tried to prove if the world was Euclidean by measuring very large triangles.

12: Gauss studied a geodesic survey of the state Hanover. This led to the development of the normal way of describing measurement errors.

15: Karl Gauss died in Gottingen, Hanover. He died in the year 1855. Gauss played an important role in mathematics and is greatly thanked for it.
