2: The Fyrd or Anglo Saxon army | It consisted of two parts 1. The "select Fyrd" which consisted of professional warrior noblemen 2.The "Great Fyrd" which consisted of peasants that were selectively drafted according to land. ex: one man for every five hides of land.
3: The normal gear of a Fyrdsman consisted of a spear, shield, bymie and a riding horse. A sword was often also on the list. The horse was mainly for transporting the Fyrd around the battle field.
4: spears The spear is their main weapon because it was very effective yet relatively cheap to using little iron to produce
5: Shields They were round and flat or eyeglass in shape made of lime wood planks bound by metal bands for strength
6: Axes Axes ranged from small throwing to longer ones such as the broadaxe which could go from 2-5 feet long These were used mainly as offensive weapon and was no useful in defense. The was cheaper than the sword because it used less expensive iron and very little steel,
7: Swords They were normally only carried by wealthier warriors and were cherished for their worth and craftsmanship. They were passed down through the family from fathers to sons. Swords were not used to block other swords in battle but rather used in conjunction with a shield when fighting They ranged from 29"-32" in length and 3" in with
8: Scramseax Was the knife carried by many of the fyrd and were used as utility knives or if large enough weapons in battle 3"-30" long
9: Projectile weapons Their were many different types of long range weapons such as bows and arrow, slings, staff sling, javelins, and even rocks
10: Armor The main armor of the Fyrd was chain mail and a helmet
