FC: Archimedes of Syracuse | Understanding the Truth | By Vignesh Rajasekaran

1: Archimedes had a variety of ways of understanding the truth, but he knew that the only way to fully understand the truth, he would have to learn and have a comprehensive knowledge in all areas of learning. With this idea, he made contributions in nearly all applications of science, math, and technology such as laws of mechanics, simple machines, specific gravity, buoyancy, and the one he thought was his most important, his findings on circle measurements and volumes of solids. This allowed him to more fully comprehend the world and his surroundings in great depth. | Math, Science, and Technology

2: Archimedes, ever since a young boy, had a desire for knowledge. His parents sent him to school where he learned math, science, art, war tactics, astronomy, and much more. But this did not satisfy his thirst for knowledge and truth, so he reached to get a higher education. During his adolescent years he studied at a famous mathematics school started by the great Euclid him self. This was the beginning foundation on his studies of math, science, technology, and understanding the truth of the world. | Higher Education

3: No one had a greater love for learning than Archimedes. He was born with a gift of having a passion for learning, and died because of it. During the Roman conquer of Syracuse, he, Archimedes, was at work with his beloved circles, while a Roman soldier was ordered by the general to bring Archimedes to him so he could meet this genius. Archimedes was immersed in a Geometry problem and was drawing circles, he told the Roman soldier," Do not disturb my circles!" With this comment, the soldier became enraged and killed him. Archimedes may ended tragically, but this love for learning and understanding of the truth was greater than his fear of death. | Love for Learning

4: Characteristics of Life | Archimedes has been known to have many characteristics that made him who he is. One trait well known about him was his apparent craziness. He was so absorbed in his work that he had to be physically forced into common tasks such as eating and bathing. Another characteristic was his perfectionism. This can be seen in the planetarium he made, which was so accurate that it was able to correctly predict eclipses. Another uncanny example of his perfectionism was his work with spheres. Spheres are considered to be symbols of perfect. These characteristics made him a genius but also helped him find understand the truth of the world.

5: Respect for Himself | People have been known to take credit for other people's work, and Archimedes was aware of that. Even though he shared his findings, he was careful about it. Archimedes always sent his discoveries to his closest friends and he knew that people would try to seize the mail, and take credit for it. But he was smart and would send fakes of the real finding. This self respect helped people realize his true smartness, and him realize what the truth was of the world laid for him

6: Open Minded | Many extraordinary scientists and philosophers have been known to ask questions but none like Archimedes. He developed puzzles for people to solve, and helped him delve into the minds of others. Puzzles ranged from the near impossible Cattle problem, to the Rancher's Dilemma, to the kids puzzle, Stomachian puzzle. The Cattle problem which includes over a million digits is still baffling people today and the Stomachian puzzle has now turned into a children's game. His open minded views led to the understanding of what other people think like.

7: Communication | All mathematicians and scientists write their works into journals and books, as did the greatest of them all, Archimedes. Archimedes wrote his findings on each subject into books such as The Sand Reckoner, and novels on plane equilibriums, parabolas, spheres, cylinders and much much more. Even though Archimedes wrote all of these, most of his discoveries were lost in the sands of time. Of this unfortunate event, of the work that survived, he was able to effectively communicate his ideas and let the world the know his findings.

8: Changing the World | "Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will move the world," famously said by Archimedes in 230 BCE, wanted to change this world with his innovative thinking and projects. His work on simple machines is displayed in this quote, and in the picture seen above illustrates this idea. Archimedes, himself, boldly knew that he would move the world with his ideas and he did. Even today he is changing the world as researchers are studying his theories on science and mathematics.

9: Environment | Archimedes, a genius none the less, would not have been as he is known today if it was not for his father and environment. He was born and raised to a wealthy family who had personal connections to the King of Syracuse. Most importantly was the fact that his father was an astronomer who greatly influenced him on getting a high education, giving him the passion of learning, and helping him to pursue his goals in mathematics and physics. Thus his home environment provided him with the resources and inspiration to innovate.

10: Legacy of the Truth | Archimedes of Syracuse and used his understanding of the truth to develop new ideas which are still in practice today. The methods he used to understand the truth is still lasting on and the the problems considered complex to him are now the basics for the science and mathematics of the modern day. He is now considered to be the greatest mathematician and physicist ever. Even after death, on his grave stone, an image of his favorite problem of a sphere inside a cylinder was drawn to remember his greatness. 12: Positive Consequences | Negative Consequences | Archimedes helped improve the knowledge of the world with his ingenious findings on nearly all fields of Mathematics and Science. Although, he did not invent many of the inventions he is given credit for, he did go in depth in explaining the concept of inventions such as the lever. This was his way of understanding of the truth of the world. | Archimedes also had negative consequences of his genius ways because of his work on weaponry. He supposedly used mirrors to burn Roman ships and some theories have developed that he led the defense of Syracuse. Also, Archimedes worked with catapults and improved the accuracy and distance a rock could travel. Overall, his discoveries in military causes the death of many.
