FC: Arthropods | By Lizzy, Anthony, Andres, and Shanna

Characteristics of an Arthropod -Arthropod are in the phylum arthropoda. - all arthropods are invertebrates - have external skeletons, segmented bodies, and jointed attachements called appendages | - appendages: wings, mouth parts, and legs - arthros means joint in Greek, podos means root or leg - all have open circulatory system, blood vessels, and bathes the internal organs - most reproduce sexually - most are either male or female - most have internal fertilization- sperm and egg unite in female

A skeleton on the outside _ they are covered in waterproof shells called exoskeleton - exoskeletons protects animal and helps prevent water from evaporation. - made of chitin which is made of linked molecules and is polymer - They molt out of their exoskeleton because it doesn't grow - After molting skin isn't as protective

Segmented Bodies - have bodies made up of identical looking segments - body segments become joined into distinct sections - sections made to perform specific functions Appendages - many arthropods have jointed appendages attached to bodies - give animal flexibility and enable to move - highly specialized tools - crayfish have antenna which are appendages on the head and contain sense organs

Origin of Arthropods Biologists used to believe arthropods and segmented worms were related because they have segmented bodies and appendages. - DNA says not related - arthropods been on Earth for over 540 million years - came from ocean - live all around world - some live in fresh not salt water - few insects can survive in saltwater Crustaceans - the major groups of arthropods are crustaceans, arachnids, centipedes, millipedes, and insects - crustaceans have 2 to 3 pairs of appendages for chewing - always have5 or more pairs of legs - each segment has a pair of legs - only arthropod with 2 pairs of antenna

Life Cycle -Most crustaceans develop into adults by metamorphosis which is a process where the animals body undergoes dramatic changes in form during its life cycle - They begin their lives as larvae Environments -Crustaceans live in any watery aria - float in ocean currents and crawl along coastlines - some crabs live in tops of palm trees - few live on damp land

Crustaceans: Feeding - obtain food in many ways - most eat dead plants and animals - others are predators that eat animals they kill Spiders and Their Relatives - Spiders, mites, and ticks are arachnids -Arachnid: an arthropod that only has 2 body sections - 1st is the head and chest, then there is the hind section or abdomen which contains reproductive organs and part of its digestive system - breathe with book lungs or a network of tubes that go out of the exoskeleton

Spiders -most known kind of arachnid - Predators and most eat insects - either hunt with webs or chasing down prey - hollow fangs inject venom into prey - venom turns tissues of prey into mush - use straws to suck in the mush - rarely bite people - most bites are not harmful, but some can hospitalize or even kill you Mites - parasites - live in fresh and salt water give people itchy rashes - mites are everywhere

Ticks - parasites that live on outside of host's body - most land animals have a type of tick on their body, sucking their blood - some can attack humans with diseases

Scorpions - arachnids - mostly in hot climates - active at night - hides in cool places during day - spine like stinger at end of abdomen that injects venom into prey -prey: spiders, insects

Centipedes and Millipedes - have segmented bodies - Centipedes have 1 pair of legs per segment - Some have over 100 segments - Centipede means hundred feet - Centipedes are predators with strong jaws - Centipedes are very venomous - Millipedes have can have more than 80 segments - Millipedes have 2 pairs of legs on each segment - Millipede means thousand feet - Millipedes are herbivores that eat decomposing leaves and other vegetation - When threatened, millipedes can curl into a ball for protection and squirt a terrible smelling liquid at a potential predator
