1: A long time ago, a great man named Baldassare Castiglione was born in then town of Casatico near Mantua, Italy. He greatly impacted the Renaissance society by influencing the idea of | the gentlemen. Baldassare had one very good friend through his childhood named David. David and Baldasare did everything together as the grew up. They were educated together in Latin and Greek. later, each had knight training together in Milan. The to brave men fought together under Francesco Gonzaga against the Spains. The two lifelong friends were no longer with each other in everything when

2: Baldassare went to England in 1505 to be knighted by Henry VII. Baldassare joined the Duke of Urbino court a few years later and was reunited with David, who had been serving in the dukes court in Baldassares absence. The two men left the court when an old friend, Joshua, asked them to join an army under the nephew

3: of Pope Julius II. The three friends fought together in various Italian Wars. During these wars, Baldassare wrote his masterpiece, The Courtier.

5: One of the figures in Balsassares' book was Francesco. Even though he had just lost a battle, the characters in the book greatly respected him.

6: During the reign of pope Leo the tenth, Baldassare Castiglione became good friends with Raphael. You may know this name from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Raphael inspired Baldassare. Raphael became Baldassares' ideal peer since Raphael was a poet. David became very jealous of his old friend Baldassare and Raphael. David decided that he would move away from Baldassare. Baldassare became very depressed upon his old friends departure, and he began slipping as a diplomat.

8: Raphael and Baldassare became very close friends. Baldassare thought of Rapael and Leonardo Da Vinci as the ideal peers. Baldassare moved back to Mantua in 1516 and got married to Ippolita Torelli. Raphael also moved to Mantua to be near his good friend Baldassare. As the two became greater friends, Baldassares' old friend David became very jealous. David, too had moved back to Mantua and got married. Davids' wife and Baldassares' wife were very good friends, and this brought Baldassare and David closer together again. One year later, Raphael passed away, and Baldassare becam deeply depressed. After this, he became best friends with David again. The two decided to take jobs as ambassadors in Spain for Pope Clement VII.

10: Baldassare and David working together as ambassadors

12: While working together in Spain, David and Baldassare had many adventures. Charles the V of Spain was no longer willing to submit to the intrigues of the pope. Bladassare and Davids' mission as ambassadors was to resolve the issue. To do this, Baldassare tried to use his skills as a writer.

14: However, his skills were not enough. Baldassare and david had failed to resolve the problem, and Constable of Bourbon led 12,000 mercenaries on an invasion of Rome. Eight days later, he left Rome in rubble. Baldassare felt terrible for what had happened and vowed to never let it happen again.

16: The pope was not very forgiving of Baldassares mistake, and he blamed the entire attack on the poor ambassador for not sending any warning. Baldassare was greatly depressed with his break with the pope.

18: Soon after his bad luck as an ambassador of Spain his longtime friend David and his beloved wife died of a mysterious disease. This deeply saddened Baldassare, and sent his depression spiraling even worse. Several years later in 1529, Baldassare Castiglione died in Toledo, Spain, but his renaissance ideas lived on. His book The Courtier had shaped the standards of a true gentlemen, and his ideas of a true courtier are still used today.
