FC: Andrew Huang and Sabrina Noriega | Cell Theory Project

Three Principles of Cell Theory | -All organisms consist of one or more cells. -All organisms are composed of cells. -Cells come from other existing cells.

Schleiden created the Cell Theory stating that all organisms are formed and composed of cells. | Robert Hooke discovered cells when cutting cork under a microscope. Without him we would not have known about cells.

Theodor Schwann was a German cell biologist who discovered the digestive enzyme pepsin. He examined animal tissue and extended Schleidan's cell theory, that all living things are made of cells, to animals, including plants. | Rudolph Virchow created the theory that cells are made from other cells.

Prokaryotic cells differ from Eukaryotic cells in many ways. They don't have a nucleus and usually have a cell wall. Because they have no nucleus their genetic information is stored in a plasmid. They reproduce in binary fission and are usually decomposers. | Three shapes are: rod shaped, spiral, and spherical, | Examples would be bacterias like Salmonella and E. Coli.

Eukaryotic Cells are found in both plants and animals. They contain a nucleus and many other organelles and a membrane. The nucleus houses the DNA which gives Eukaryotic it's name. This cell is 10 times the size of an Prokaryotic cell.

Plant Cells | The cell membrane of this cell is surrounded by a cell wall, helping the cell maintain its shape. This cell contains chloroplasts that make food through photosynthesis. Like the animal cell, it has a nucleus and mitochondria.

The Animal cell contains a nucleus, like the Plant cell, which houses DNA, cell membrane and Golgi Apparatus. Because the cell wall is absent, it allows to adapt different shapes. | Animal Cells

The Ten Cell Structures | Nucleus- Brain of the cell. Contains genetic information and acts as a control center for the cell | The mitochondrion gives energy to the cell using ATP as a chemical energy. | Chloroplasts are similar to the animal cell's mitochondrion. It gives energy by allowing photosynthesis in plant cells. | The cell wall protects organelles and provides structure for the plant cell. | The rough ER transports proteins made from the ribosomes attached to it. The smooth ER transports lipids and does not have ribosomes on it.

The Cytoplasm is mainly made up of water and proteins. This is where most cell activity occurs and where the cell structures are located. | Ribosomes synthesize proteins and are either attached to the Rough ER or are in the cytoplasm. | The golgi apparatus takes the proteins made from the Rough ER and packages and distributes them. | The Lysosome breaks down waste in the cell. | The vacuole stores water and energy for the plant cell.

The cell membrane is a membrane that separates the inside of the cell and the outside, like a protective barrier, so that both of the environments can be different.

Homeostasis is the state of having internal balance and having a stable condition. It is the cell's function to try to maintain this state.
