BC: The End

FC: By: Ashley Long | The Commonplace Book

 Ashley Long Period: 1 March 28, 2011

On Freedom | "The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission." ~JFK

In my opinion, America has fought for freedom and will never stop. Of course there will be many obstacles standing in the way, but surrendering is not an option. Americans have fought so many wars and they have always pushed themselves to their limits. No matter how many struggles the nation may be going through, it will never give up. America deserves freedom because the country has gone through so much to earn it.

On Togetherness | "We must delight in each other; make others' conditions our own; rejoice together, labor and suffer together, always having before our eyes our commission and community in the work, as members of the same body." ~John Winthrop

In John Winthrop's "A Model of Christian Charity", the Puritans on the Arabella must work together and feel one another's pain. This will allow them to be successful. They know that they will go through difficulties and unity will help to cope with them. | Because they will be seen as "a city on a hill", they cannot fail. Through teamwork, they believe that they will please God and then he will bless them.

On Sin | "Adultery, John." ~Elizabeth Proctor from The Crucible

This quote is significant in The Crucible because it helps demonstrate the tension between John and Elizabeth Proctor. When John is asked to recite his ten commandments, he forgets the one he commits, adultery. He tries to push the unwanted thought completely out of his mind. His wife is well aware of his sin and has to remind him of it. I think this is incredibly ironic because after cheating on his wife with a younger girl, one would surely expect him to remember it.

On Inspiration | "In this remarkably observed gesture of a troubled young girl, I believed, a play became possible." ~from Arthur Miller's "Why I Wrote the Crucible"

Arthur Miller wrote the play, The Crucible, with inspiration from Abigail Williams. In my opinion, she is a troubled, mean, bastard who always makes the wrong choices. All her terrible choices helped guide the path of the play. One example was helping a married man cheat on his wife which led to a whole bunch of shenanigans. All in all, Abigail Williams has a huge personality that helped create the basis of the play The Crucible.

"A man being sometimes more generous when he has but a little money than when he has plenty, perhaps through fear of being thought to have but little." ~from Benjamin Franklin's The Autobiography | On Reputation

According to Benjamin Franklin, many poor people are generous because of their fear of being thought of as poor. I feel that those who are rich are not willing to give up what they have because they don't want to lose it. I also think that sometimes poor people give money just because they are kind people, not because of their reputation. | Benjamin Franklin goes through this during his arrival in Philadelphia. He does not have much but he is willing to share his small amount of bread with others.

"These eighteen years, through all the changing scenes and seasons, changeless since the day she died." ~from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Cross of Snow" | On Loss

It is incredibly difficult to get over the loss of a loved one. Longfellow compares his heart to the area on the mountain where snow never melts. He claims he will never be able to get over his dead wife. He watches the seasons change, yet his deep emotions never will. I completely understand how Longfellow felt because after recently losing a family member, I can relate.

"So Nature deals with us and takes away our play things one by one, and by the hand leads us to rest so gently." ~from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Nature" | On Nature

We all need to accept that death is just a simple part of nature. Mother Nature will take away those we love throughout our lives. Everybody wants to continue on with their lives without thinking of death. Of course when it is our turn we will be hesitant because we won't be sure what lies ahead. It may be better or worse than what we have now.

On Death | "Of the last bitter hour come like a blight over thy spirit, and sad images of the stern agony, and shroud and pall." ~from William Cullen Bryant's "Thanatopsis"

Life goes by quickly than people think. Sometimes when people die, they never see it coming. Just like Bryant says, no one should fear dying because there is no possible way to escape it. Also, in my opinion, no one should be afraid when they die because others who have died before them will be waiting. Of course everyone will have to leave their loved ones on earth, but everyone will be reunited after death.

"The past can hurt. You can either run from it or learn from it." ~Rafiki from The Lion King | On Perseverance

Lessons are learned as one progresses on in life. We need to understand that everyone makes mistakes. The way one chooses to handle their mistakes reflects the strength that person. | One option is to escape all troubles. In my opinion, the better option is to learn from mistakes so that they are not repeated.

"You may say that I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one. I hope some day you will join us and the world will live as one." ~From John Lennon's "Imagine" | On Peace | On Peace

John Lennon dreams of the world being as one. If everyone could stop being so self-centered, we could all help one other out to cope with all problems. Imagine the world with no religion, government, or war. If the world was made up of peace, it would be amazing. Everyone would be happy and living as one.

On Gifts | "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift; that's why they call it the present." ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Everyone needs to run their own lives and take chances. Forget about back then because its in the past. What happens tomorrow can be totally different than one expects. Everyone needs to live in the moment since it is a gift from God. Make the most of it and enjoy it.

"My Mama always said, 'Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get.'" ~Forrest Gump | On Surprises

When someone reaches into a box of chocolates, they may be reaching for caramel filled, peanut butter filled, or maybe even strawberry filled. Some flavors are good and some are just gross. The crazy thing is that they never know what kind they're going to get. Just like chocolates, life is always full of surprises. Sometimes amazing things happen to someone, and sometimes not so amazing things happen to someone. You just never know what you are going to get.

 On Hope | "Don't stop believing." ~Journey

Sometimes in life we feel hopeless, like there is nothing we can do. We also sometimes fear what may happen if we do try. There are many obstacles in life that cannot be overcome without hope and perseverance. Everyone should hold their heads up high and keep trying. Nobody should ever give up in order to achieve their goals.
