"Suspected Al-Qaeda Bombing Misses Yemen Minister" | On Tuesday September 11, a powerful car bomb erupted in Yemen's capitol. This bomb killed at least 13 people but missed the intended target. It has been determined that Yemen's defense minister was meant to be assassinated by the bomb. The defense minister, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, is known for working against al-Qaeda. This is not the first attempted assassination against Ahmed and it is suspected that al-Qaeda is behind the attempted killings.

This event is important because there has been a lot of conflict in the Arabian Peninsula. If a war breaks out, our troops may be brought there to help. This would put more stress on our economy and the people. More of our families and friends who are in the military could be hurt or killed. A war would probably cause the oil/ gas and other prices to go up because we get a lot of our oil from the Middle East. | Effect

North Korea warns US on missiles after South deal | On October 9th, South Korea announced that they had reached an agreement with the United States to extend the range that their missiles could fly. Our earlier agreement said that their missiles could have a range up to 300 kilometers. This new deal lets the missile range be more than doubled to 800 kilometers. Two days later, North Korea reacted by making a statement saying that they now have missiles that can reach mainland United States. We do not believe this to be true because we heard that their last few long range missile tests failed. Even so, they still have many nuclear weapons that could be used against other nations. | "North Korea Warns US on Missiles after South Deal." BBC News. N.p., 8 Oct. 2012. Web. 9 Oct. 2012. .

This greatly affects us because we are allies with South Korea who is technically still at war with North Korea. We also have over 28,000 troops in South Korea and if a nuclear fight breaks out, they and many others will die. If/ when North Korea has missiles that can reach mainland United States, they would be able to use them against us. It would be easy to manipulate us because of the power they would have over us. Let us hope that it does not come to this. | Importance

Border Patrol shoots Mexican man from across border | On October 11th, a young Mexican man was killed by the United States’ border patrol. Late Wednesday night, he was seen crossing back into Mexico after dropping a load of narcotics on the United States side. Once he was on the other side of the border, he turned around and started throwing rocks at the patrol agents. When he did not stop, an agent shot his weapon at the man. After the site was investigated, it was known that the man was shot a total of ten times.

Effect | This event can affect us in many ways. Drug dealers will be more cautious about bringing drugs into the United States now that they have seen the consequences. It would be a very good development if fewer drugs were brought into the United States. Another effect could be that the Mexican government thinks it was an unnecessary murder and decided to fight it. Our government is already involved in many different conflicts and we just cannot do everything.

Spain Prestige oil spill disaster case in court | A trial has begun for four men who were involved in the 2002 oil disaster. A large oil tanker sank off the north coast of Spain causing over 50,000 tons of oil to be spilled into the Atlantic and polluting thousands of miles of the coast. This was one of the world’s worst environmental disasters and was investigated for eight years. Then, it took two years to make it to court. Three crew members and a Spanish official are being tried for environmental damage and disregard of the law. Also, locals who were affected by the spill are demanding up to 2.2 billion Euros (2.9 billion dollars).

Because many countries were involved and affected by this oil spill, it greatly involves us. Since we are a developed country, we have a duty to help keep other nations at peace. The trial could create resentments between many countries that we are allies with and it could put us into a tight situation. Conflicts build up over time so it is wise to control the tensions early on to prevent too many battles. Also, the spill affected us because European countries export many goods to the United States and the disaster destroyed many resources. | How does this involve us?

Eleven killed in Iraq bombings and shootings – officials | Around the twentieth of October, there were at least 11 people killed in various attacks in Iraq. Seven were killed in a very deadly bombing and four people were killed in three different shootings. Although there is less violence in Iraq than in 2006-2007, it has been increasing again since US troops have left. In September, we had the most deadly month in over two years. About 365 people were killed in Iraq during this time.

Effect: | This event has a humongous effect on us in the United States. First, troops may be sent back to Iraq to bring the level of violence down. If our soldiers are sent back, more of our citizens will be killed. Also, we are in the middle of a presidential election and who we vote for might depend on whether the candidate is planning to send troops back to Iraq or not. The war in Iraq has affected us for a long time and it will continue to for a while.
