Gold A metallic element, constituting the most precious metal used as a common commercial medium of exchange. It has a characteristic yellow color, is one of the heaviest substances known (specific gravity 19.32), is soft, and very malleable and ductile. It is quite unalterable by heat, moisture, and most corrosive agents, and therefore well suited for its use in coin and jewelry. Atomic weight 196.7.
Food Food was very expensive on the diggings. Flour, tea and mutton had to be carted from town by bullocks.. apparently there was no refrigeration, so fresh food was impossible to keep. Meat and bread are what miners mostly lived on. Mutton was cheap because wool farmers sold their old sheep for meat.
gold licenses When you were digging for gold in the gold fields you would have to have a gold license. If you were caught with out a gold license the police would not let you go gold mining and they would take you back to the town to jail.
Robbers When you were on the gold fields robbers were around and sometimes you would get unlucky and the robbers would come to you.. Robbers would take your money and all your gold and you are left with nothing.
Tools Tools were very important on the gold fields because with out them you would leave with out any gold. Some of the tools they used were a pick, plate, bucket, wind-glass and a cradle..
Other tools included utensils for digging and carrying gold-bearing soil. They included basic equipment for survival, for constructing some sort of shelter, or simple protection. These included: shovel, pick, rope, saw, Axe, Pick, Wheelbarrow and a Gun.
