1: What is Imagery? | Imagery is the use of an image or object to represent characteristics or changes of the character.

3: In the novel, the concept of death can relate to character perspectives in a few ways. This quote shows how death has changed Joe's attitude and perspective on life.

4: The Pear Tree and Expectations

5: In the novel, Janie uses the pear tree to symbolize her expectations for a perfect relationship. The quote below illustrates her desire to fulfill her expectations of a "pear tree" relationship. | "Oh to be a pear tree-- any tree in bloom!" -- Janie, pg. 11

7: In the novel, the horizon is a key symbol of goals. This quote is about Janie's personal goals and how they tie in to the horizon. Her goals were on the horizon, but she reached them.
