FC: Meet Sarah Kinsler!
About Me: Sister, Daughter, Friend, World Traveler, Reader, Teacher, and life long learner! | A perfect day would be by Lake Michigan, with a great book and a Starbucks coffee. | I believe in living life with a smile, serving others, and accepting every opportunity life has to give.
I am a Michigan State Spartan through and through! | I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education (LD) from MSU in 2010. I then spent the next year student teaching in Grand Rapids MI in a 3rd grade general education room, and then an elementary resource room. This past year I was blessed to find a wonderful job. I teach 5th and 6th grade students in a behavioral resource room in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. Three weeks ago I finished my first year of teaching. I had so many learning moments it would be hard to list them all. Each of my students taught me more about myself as both an educator and a person.
This last year I worked with five students whose primary disabilities were Emotional Impairments. Along with behavioral needs each one of these students was below grade level in reading. Many of them hated to read, and it was a major hurtle as a teacher to help instill a love of reading in my students. I ran small group fluency groups, as well as small literature groups to work on comprehension skills. Their reading difficulties also made all other school subjects difficult, and would often drive my students in to behavioral meltdowns because of their frustration with reading.
Difficulties in Teaching Literacy Addressing a wide range of learning needs and abilities. Instilling a love of reading in my students. Assessing my student's needs as their needs changed. Addressing my student's needs while trying to complete the requirements of the curriculum.
What I hope to learn in this class are new ways to reach all my students regardless of their literacy needs. I want to find new ways to promote motivation in my instruction in order to encourage their love for reading and writing. I always say that I am a life long learner and I hope to continue learning for the benefit of my students .
