32: Dear Charley, I know our journey together hasn't been easy. I know you have doubted yourself, doubted me, even doubted our family at times. I just want you to know that I don't doubt any of it - There's a reason you came into our lives, and we're all stronger and better for it. I've learned so much from you, and you've given us all so much love and support and stability. That, in my mind, is the backbone to family. I love you dearly. My kids absolutely adore you - You will always have a special place in all our hearts. Happy Birthday! ~Mindy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dear Charley, Many say in life that the gift of love is rare; that most don’t experience an unconditional love and that it should be nurtured, cherished and honored. It seems like you’ve been there for us from the beginning; from the time I was squashing bugs and wearing plastic heels. It’s no surprise as you’ve been more of a father to me than I ever hoped or dreamed possible. You’ve loved me unconditionally, accepted my flaws and my faults and been more proud of me than I of myself at times. As you celebrate this birthday, know how much you are loved. Know how your big heart, your giving soul and your spirit have enlightened all who have known you. You’re special, Charley. You warm a room when you walk into it. You listen so carefully to every detail as if it’s the only thing in the world you must do. You make me feel so blessed to be a part of this family; honored to know what it feels to belong and to be a part of something that I know many never experience. Happy Birthday, Charley. Enjoy your special day. Desiree
33: Dear Charley, I met you during the summer of 1988. It was the summer before I left for college. You met mom that summer, fell in love and had to accept the fact that she had three daughters. From the beginning, you opened your home and your heart and took all of us in without a second thought. You shared in all of our moments from the triumphant accomplishments to the darkest of the sad. You took time to teach us life lessons and graciously allowed us to teach you some as well. Words simply cannot capture the pure affection and love we feel for you. We are grateful for all you have given us over the years and for all the memories yet to come. Happy 60th Birthday Charley! Take time to look back over your life and smile at the thought that your life is rich and full. You have family all around you who hold you near and dear! I love you! ~Dominique

35: Dear Charley, You're 60? I can't tell a difference. Not! When I met you in Staunton in the Fall of 1988, your Gutierrez grandsons were nearly a decade away, Dominique was eighteen, I was twenty and you were not-yet thirty-eight. Your brown coiffure had some gray streaks, but those few strands offered few clues. No one knew that time would send its silvery ministry upon you with all the conviction of St. Ignacius and his Jesuits. At that time, you were a psychiatrist who used to ride a Harley. My undeveloped teen brain thought you could breathe fire, decipher motives behind motives and augur the future. Intimidating, even if untrue. Maybe that's why I had to poke the tiger: No doubt you and I will not forget the daylight moon over Barterbrook, a sighting that occurred as you tried to take some pictures of Dominique and me. Certainly, I will not forget how you stomped back into the house and my subsequent apology. Ahhhh ... priceless are the moments that bond a father-in-law with his his son-in-law. Through the years, my misguided impression of you, the intimidating psychiatrist, has of course been replaced. I have come to see you, above all, as family: a father-in-law who will sit with me for hours to design, of all things, a uniform for a cycling team, the Oopai with boundless generosity. You have offered us, sans quid pro quo, the little things and the big things: your books, your music and your steaks. More so, you have offered us your home, your thoughts and your heart. Dominique and I are lucky that Mom picked you, but I our sons are even luckier. ciao, B PS: Happy Birthday.
