FC: My Story book

Written and illustrated by Priscilla Azzi.

Hi my name is Priscilla Azzi, I was born in Australia on the 14th of January 1999. I live with my parents and my nine year old brother, we come from a catholic Lebanese background. We have religious beliefs and values, my parents send me and my brother to St Charbels College because it is a Lebanese catholic school and there we learn about our heritage, culture and religion.

I love my school because all my cousins go there and I have two best friends which I have been with for years. For my after school activities, I do dancing and learn music, I play the piano, music helps you to express your feelings, it expands your mind and helps you develop, and calms you down.

 Piano

 Dancing

I am also interested in a lot of sports for example: I learn taekwondo it teaches me self defense which is very important these days. I also learn swimming, I think swimming is not just an interest it is something important that every one should learn to be able to save their lives, we all hear about incidents that happen on the beaches, in the pools and in swimming carnivals etc.

Other than after school activities I am a hard working student I do my best at school that's why we get rewarded at the end of each year and we go on a holiday. So far we've been to Queensland twice which my family enjoys the most, we have also been to the Terrigal and the Central Coast, but my dream is to one dream visit different countries.

In life we go through many challenges some are positive and some are negative, like many others I've been through both. One of my negative challenges was in primary when I had to work extra hard to understand how friendship works it is not easy you have to give and take but one advise I can give you is when you find that special friend hold on to her/him, and that's what I did I have been with my friends since year three and we are still together until now and I hope we will always be. Another negative challenge is my big move to high school the thought of it was really frightening, I went through so many different feelings during the school holiday, so many thoughts but none of them were positive, one thing was for sure is that I didn't want the school holidays to finish so I wouldn't have to go back to school and face the big day.

But as time passed, I started to find out it's not so bad, I like it here the teachers are friendly, I still have my friends, I don't miss primary at all, All I had to do was face up to the challenge and everything was going to be OK.

Enough talking about the negative challenges, there are a lot of positive challenges that I have been through, what's important is that we are blessed to be in a K-12 school, at least I got to stay with my friends and help each other through it, but on the other hand we had new students coming from different schools to a new school, new teachers, and new friends. Looking at those new kids on the first day made me realize what are our feelings compared to their's.

Another positive challenge in my life is going to be about High School again, I am overwhelmed with everything that's going on around me, the only thing I could think of at the moment is the loads of HOMEWORK and ASSIGNMENTS, on the other hand I consider myself very lucky to have a mum that grew up and studied in this country, so as you can imagine YES she is a big help to me, she makes me feel better and gives me confident. Homework seems so much easier when you know there's someone you can count on if you get stuck and need help, I appreciate this more because I see other kids who their parents don't speak English and how much they struggle. One thing I've learned from all these challenges whether it was positive or negative is that they helped me grow strong and understand more.

5 coping strategies; | 1. Spend time with family & friends, try to be open with your feelings. 2. Consider the importance of spirituality in your life. 3. Remind your self that problems are a part of life, but they can be worked through. 4. Needing help is not failing, it is simply being human. It is OK to ask for help. 5. Get involved in after school activities.

5 support services; | 1. Headspace is all about getting the message out there that it's ok to talk about your problems, and to encourage young people and their families and friends to get help when it's needed. 2. Visit your church and speak to the priest. 3. Kids help line is Australia's only free confidential and anonymous telephone and online counselling service. 4 Lifeline is a network of volunteer counselling, they will help you find the clarity to deal with confusing and challenging times. 5. Find out what after school activities you might be interested in, contact your council to see what's available in your area.

2 short term goals; | 1 intermediate goal; | * finishing my homework and not getting a bad comment in my diary from the teacher. * finishing and handing in my assignments on time. | * Everything in life is all about hard work for example at school I get assignment I do my best, but don't get the marks I'd expected, but that's ok, remember no one is perfect, but I'll set a goal to try much harder in term two.

2 long term goals; | * To be more confident when doing my school homework. * To try to get A's on my reports.

When I think about the changes that I expect to have to deal with in the next five years, a lot of things go through my head not just one. Early adolescence is a time of many physical, mental, emotional and social changes. It can also be a time when I might face peer pressure to use alcohol, tobacco products and drugs etc... Other challenges can be eating disorders, depression and family problems.

At this stage I think the challenge I will be facing will be about becoming independent with my own personality, opinion and interests, to focus on myself, juggling between high expectations and lack of confidence, I will be facing more challenging work at school, I must focus on the learning goals I want to achieve, aim to do as well as I can in the subjects I am doing, try to focus into getting the best TER result to get into the coarse I want to do.
