FC: Okonkwo | Things Fall Apart.

By Rosalya Menendenz Mrs. Holmes English II Honors

He is part of the Ibo tribe, because of his lazy father Unoka, "he did not had the lucky start of life in wich many young men had. He neither inherited a barn, nor a title, nor even a young wife."

Different from his father, Okonkwo has always been a hard worker, young he brought honor to his village when he defeated Amalinze the Cat, who was the great wrestler that was unbeaten for seven years, from Umuofia to Mbaino.

After defeating the Cat he became very known through the nine villages. | Everyone had respect for him...

Hating his poor, coward father , Okonkwo grew up with opposite ideals and became | productive, wealthy, brave, violent, and opposed to music and anything else that he perceives to be "soft".

Okonkwo has three wives and nine children. Nwoye, he's oldest son is considered lazy and week by his father, reminding him of Unoka. Okonkwo continually beats Nwoye to correct his personality. When under the order of Ikemefuna, a boy given to Okonkwo by a neighboring village, Nwoye starts acting with more masculinity wich pleases his father. After a while Oknoknwo grows affection for Ikemefuna but he never shows it.

A while later the elders decided Ikemefuna had to die. Okonkwo himself strikes the killing blow as Ikemefuna begs him for protection. After his death eveything started to go wrong for Okonkwo. | After killing someone at the funeral ceremony he and his family were exciled for seven years. When he got back, the tribe was different, there were white men trying to change their religion and culture. Okonkwo killed one of them thinking the tribe was going to stand up against them

But nothing happened, even his own son Nwoye accepted christianity, so he lost all hope. When the white men heard what he did they went to his house to take him to court, but it was too late. | When Oknonkwo realized everything was lost, he hanged himself.

"Okonkwo's whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness, and the fear that he will resemble his father. Ironically, in all his efforts not to end up like his father, he commits suicide, becoming an abomination to the Earth and rebuked by the tribe just like his father"
