BC: To be able to completely eliminate sexual assault is probably an impossible task, as we will never be able to control the decisions of individuals. However, there are steps we, as a society, can take to lessen the amount of victims who suffer from sexual assault and hopefully eliminate some of the long-lasting psychological effects it has on victims. As mentioned before, bringing awareness to sexual assault is one way to help in the fight against sexual assault. Sexual assault may be prevented through education as well. The more educated someone is, the more aware of the situation they can be. There have also been many rape prevention programs that have been tested and verified through scientific studies. For example there are programs called "The Men's Program," "MVP:Mentors in Violence Prevention," and "The Green Dot." These programs focus on bystander intervention and encourage males to intervene when they see something wrong happening. Many people fall into the bystander effect, in which they think someone else will handle it, but no one does. So these programs aim to encourage people to intervene in risky situations. The most important thing to remember about sexual assault is it is never the victim's fault, no matter what someone was wearing or where someone was at, it doesn't mean they asked for it.

Sexual assault is a prevalent problem in today's society. It is a problem that many are afraid to speak of, but exists and happens every day. Sexual assault can include "child sexual abuse, rape, attempted rape, incest, exhibitionism (when someone watches private sexual acts), voyeurism (when some exposes him/herself in public), obscene phone calls, fondling, and sexual harassment." Sexual assault can take many forms, but is a generic term that is defined as any involuntary sexual act in which a person is threatened, coerced, or forced to engage against their will, or any sexual touching of a person who has not consented.

Usually sexual assault is applied to women and children only, but men are often times victims of sexual assault as well. Sexual assault is a huge problem for society as has many psychological and physical effects for the victim. Some emotional effects can include denial, helplessness, dislike of sex, anger, self-blame, anxiety, shame, nightmares, fear, depression, flashbacks, guilt, rationalization, mood-swings, numbness, promiscuity, loneliness, social anxiety, difficulty trusting oneself or others, and difficulty concentrating. These emotions have long-lasting psychological effects on the individual and can interrupt their daily functioning.

There are many different types of sexual assault, such as child sexual abuse, rape, acquaintance rape, date rape, and sexual harassment. Child sexual abuse is defined as any situation in which an adult or another child threatens, forces, or manipulates a child into sexual activity. Child sexual abuse can also include exposing a child to pornography or fondling. Incest is intercourse or touching sexual parts between an adult family member and a child or between siblings. Rape is sexual intercourse with a person without his or her consent. It is an act of violence against someone, using sex as their weapon. Stranger rape is when the victim doesn't know his or her offender.

Many times stranger rape is believed to only happen to women who dress a certain way, walk alone at night, or park in parking garages. However, stranger rape can happen to anyone, anywhere, and during any time of the day. Acquaintance rape is where the victim knows the offender. The offender could be a friend, coworker, or neighbor. This is the most common type of rape. Eighty-four percent of rapes happen among people who know one another. Date rape is a specific kind of acquaintance rape that occurs between two people who are dating. There is also such thing as marital rape that occurs between a husband and wife.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Many times this type of sexual assault occurs in a workplace setting or educational setting. It is important to understand the differences of sexual assault, as more awareness needs to be brought to this problem. There is a silence that surrounds sexual assault and therefore many myths are created overtime. Some sayings that are myths include, only women can be raped; a husband can rape his wife; she asked for it with what she was wearing; that child must be lying. A victim never asks to be assaulted and is never to be blamed.

Sexual assault from a functional perspective is examined by looking at the functions or consequences of the structure of a society. If we look at sexual assault as being criminal, functionalist would say that criminal behavior is normal and inevitable. It could considered functional because it separates acceptable behavior from non-acceptable behavior in society. The way society operates gives people the freedom to pursue their own desires, even when they are criminal and hurtful to others. Functionalist are looking at how sexual assault occurs through the order of society and not necessarily is if is good or bad.

Sexual assault from a conflict perspective argues that this social problem arises from how society is held together by power and coercion, for the benefit of those in power. There is continuing conflict between members in society, with power and those without. Many times people who are the victims of sexual assault are those less fortunate with resources. Many times minorities are sexual assaulted, as well as women who lack the physical strength of men. Sexual assault can be seen as benefiting those in power, because they are able to get away with it due to having resources such as power within the community and money to hire the necessary legal matters.

Interactionist perspective for sexual assault is a wide range to explain. With interactionist, often times the victims find themselves raising awareness for other women about sexual assault. One way this theory is brought about is the interactions between women amongst themselves, there are organizations that go around helping promote the awareness of sexual assault, many of these women who travel with these organizations tend to be victims of sexual assault themselves. Sexual assault can happen in a wide variety of places, it can happen in the home, work, school, and public areas. Women bring awareness to where sexual assault can take place, and that this happens often in these areas.

According to our book, feminist theory states "that there is not one, but many, theories or perspectives and that each feminist theory or perspective attempts to describe women's oppression, to explain its causes and consequences, and to prescribe strategies for women's liberation." So when it comes to sexual assault according to the feminist theory, it seems to be that they all liberate together to come up with a strategy plan to help prevent this from happening. They will also come up with a strategy to take in case sexual assault has already been committed. They will reinforce the federal laws that are in place to help protect against sexual assault, and to protect the identity of the victim.

So, coming from a feminist standpoint, it will often sound biased, but they are coming from personal experience and statistics to back up what they are saying. Sexual assault is something that needs to be taken very seriously. There are laws now stating a certain percentage of women have to be hired at a certain level, there also has to be so many women in management businesses when it comes to a certain size. Sexual assault can be where men degrade the women in the work place, it doesn't necessarily have to be sexual, but when you are verbally oppressing a woman because of her sex, then that is just as guilty as if it was physical or verbal sexual comment. Feminist theory is based off a woman's perspective, but it is often times portrayed the right way because of how women were treated in the last couple hundred years, women are now getting equal rights and now able to do a lot of the men's jobs.

There are precautions that can be taken to avoid these unfortunate events from happening to an individual. So how do people stand up for themselves? They become more knowledgeable about the situation; you can take self-defense classes just in case something happens in a public away from a populated area. Most companies now have a policy to where if you talk to your boss in private, they are held responsible for reporting the situation to proper authorities without making any judgments, or talking about the situation openly.

So through social action that is taken place amongst the people who are talking about awareness and to the audience, people are now being able to interact with one another figuring out more about the information and are creating a society that is aware of the this problem and how to fight sexual assault on women and men. This is a good way to show support for fighting against sexual assault and gives people firsthand knowledge on what to do.
