1: What is Social Literacy? | Social literacy is the collaboration of new media modes and using those modes in environments for learning in school and out of school contexts.
2: Why is Social Literacy Important? | Social literacy is important because it has been found to be incredibly useful in a classroom environment. | "Participatory culture shifts the focus of literacy from one of individual expression to community involvement. The new literacies almost all involve social skills developed through collaboration and networking. These skills build on the foundation of traditional literacy, research skills, technical skills, and critical analysis skills taught in the classroom." 3: Examples of Social Literacy in the Classroom | Class websites Class websites are typically managed by the teacher or course instructor. They can be customized to include information about course and curriculum material. This is also a great place for teachers to link resources that could be useful to parents at home
4: Google Docs Google docs are public web documents that are created on Google. The advantage to these documents is that multiple group members can add to the document via their own computer. It is very useful for group projects because they are always available online.
5: Social Networking Sites Social networking is incredibly popular and in most cases it is an easy and quick way to contact group members. Facebook is a popular social networking site for students above the age of 13. On this site you can become friends with other students and socialize with them through messaging, photos, or status updates. Webkins and Club Penguin are social networking sites that are aimed at youth. On these sites you create an avatar and socialize with others. You can participate in games to simulate real-life activities as well as socialize with others.
6: Blogging Blog posting is common in the classroom. An instructor can create a class blog and pose questions to their students who must respond by blogging. The blog is visible to all who are invited to the blog and it is an easy way to ask questions, comment, and post valuable information that is available to a large amount of people, such as a classroom.
7: Wikibooks Wikibooks are free educational texts available online | Wonder Wall Wonder Walls connects groups or classes with a moderator (ex. teacher, scientist) in a playful communication space. Here students can be connected and ask questions and pose ideas while outside of the classroom. | Skype Skype is a software you download to make phone calls and chats over the internet. There is also a feature that allows video conferencing. This is useful to students who want to keep in contact with their instructor. In some cases, it is possible to create a course online and use skype as a tool to teach.
8: The Digital Youth Network | The Digital Youth Network is a hybrid digital literacy program whose goal is to create learning environments for students in school and out of school contexts. They teach students how to use new media tools and develop their technical skills. Most social literacy media modes, that you would use in a classroom, take place online. The DYN wants to give students who may not have internet access at home a chance to still learn about these new media modes.
9: Information Literacy & Social Literacy | Information literacy is the act of effectively researching the internet for information. It is very important for students to know what search engine they should be using to find the type of information they're looking for. Sites such as noodletools.com helps researchers narrow down what they of infomation they are seeking and what the best search engine is to use. As students become familiar with navigating the internet, it is key that they learn how to decipher which sites are for advocacy or education.
10: What is Most Practical for an Elementary School Classroom In my experience as a college student, I have used almost every popular social media mode. In regards to an elementary classroom, I would have to say a class website seems most practical. It is a fantastic way to keep parents notified as to what is going on in the class and it can be a great resource too. Teachers must be aware if their students have access to internet at home because then you can decide how interactive the site can be for the class.
11: My Thoughts on Mixbook This is the first time I have ever used this new technology and I do not find it to be useful in the classroom. The idea of this website is to create a digital scrapbook filled with pictures, not text information. I would never attempt to teach a lesson using this technology. Instead, I would use this if I wanted to create a class scrapbook of all we did throughout the year. The website itself is very difficult to navigate and incredibly slow. I found this assignment frustrating solely because of Mixbook. In the future I would most likely use Power Point to teach a lesson like this.
