There once was a girl named Sophie. She was 17 years old, and lived in Paris, France.
It was the time of Enlightenment and everyone was applying the scientific method to all aspects of the society.
Sophie was at home one day, when a letter came from the king, saying that men were needed for the French army.
Her father was a philosophe, his name was Rousseau. Sophie knew that he couldn't fight, he had no experience. Plus, he was needed here in France.
Sophie saw that the letter was very important and rushed to give it to her father. When she found him she saw that he was already talking to a man that she did not know. She stepped in closer to hear their conversation.
"You need to join us, we can't do it without you." The man that she didn't know said. "I just can't do it Voltaire" so that was his name "What would I do about my family, and all of the progress that the philosophes are making?" Her father was saying. "But Rousseau, we need someone of your intelligence!" "Look how many times do I have to say this? I can't leave my family and I'm needed here."
Sophie couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her father refused to go to war in America. So she did the only thing that she could think of, she tried to convince him.
"But father, can't you go please? I want to come with you to explore!" "I've told you Sophie, I'm not going!"
Their argument lasted for another hour before her father finally gave in.
"I'll go sign up first thing in the morning, and tell them that you will be coming with me also. But for now, just get some sleep." Her father said. Sophie went to her room and fell asleep in minutes. She was so excited about finally going to America, but little did she know that it would not be what she had expected.
3 Months Later Sophie was inside of the ship, in her room. It had been three months of sailing with no land in sight, and she was getting sick of it.
Sophie got off of her bed and headed towards the door. Once she stepped outside, she breathed in the fresh air. She walked over to her father who was talking to Voltaire. When he saw her, he said something to Voltaire and walked towards her. "Hello Sophie, I see that you finally decided to come out of the room that you've been in for the past week." "Yes father, I needed some fresh air." She said. Her father studied her for a few moments, and then spoke. "Well, I thought I might need to tell you that we will be arriving in America in the next few days. They've spotted land."
Sophie was ecstatic. "Oh father, are you serious?" she said. Sophie was so excited that she was jumping up and down, clapping her hands. Her father was looking at her with a smile on his face. "Yes Sophie, I am. Now, why don,t you run along and find something to do, hmm?" "Yes, sir."
Over the next few days, all of the crew was ecstatic about spotting land. Everything was hectic as they were trying to get everything ready for the arrival. Sophie spent most of her time in her room gathering all of her things.
"Sophie!" She turned around and her father and Voltaire were walking up to her. "Yes?" "We've reached the shore. We're going to go and have a look around. Would you like to join us?" This time it was Voltaire that addressed her. "Of course." They started to walk away and Sophie followed them.
When they reached the shore, they saw some people waiting for them. "Hello there! Who are you?" Sophie's father asked when he caught sight of them. "We're some of the colonists who live here in America. We're pleased that you could come and help us." A man that Sophie thought looked to be in their late 20s early 30s, said. "It's our pleasure." Voltaire said "England is going to get what they deserve. Do you mind if I ask you your name, sir?" "No, I don't mind. I'm Thomas Jefferson, and these men here are locals." Sophie knew that she had heard that name before somewhere, but she couldn't remember when or where.
When they reached a little village, Sophie decided that she wanted to go look around for herself. She silently slipped away from the group and headed towards the woods.
Sophie was walking through the woods while looking at everything. She was amazed at how beautiful it was. She knew that France would not even compare to this beauty. She walked a little, and while she wasn't watching where she was going she walked into something that was very hard.
"Whoa there! Are you okay?" Sophie looked up from the ground and saw Thomas Jefferson standing over her. "Yes, of course. I'm fine." Sophie studied him for a minute but she still couldn't place where she had either seen him or heard his name before. So she finally decided to ask him. "Excuse me, but do I know you from somewhere?" He looked at her for a few moments before answering. "I have written a few things in my time..." That explained it! She had read one of his works before! "Thank you for clearing that up for me." "No trouble at all." They walked back towards the village.
A few years passed and it turned out that they did not need Sophie's father to fight. Sophie loved life in America, but she missed France. One night she was in her room when her father asked if he could come in. "Of course!" "Sophie, I came here to tell you that we will be leaving for Paris in the morning. Is that okay?" "Oh father! I've missed France so much! I can't wait!" The next day Sophie, her father, and a few other men boarded a ship back to Europe. A couple of years later and they heard the news that America was now free because of the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson.
