The Stock Market Crash of 1929

There are many things that may have caused the Great Depression. The stock market crash is believed to be the top cause of the Great Depression. Too many people were margin buying and speculating. Margin buying was when people bought stocks with mostly borrowed money. Speculating was when people bought and sold stocks rapidly to make a quick profit. This inflated the market and caused it to crash. Another cause of the Great Depression was bank failures. Banks started failing for a few reasons, one being that people were purchasing a lot of things on credit. Also, a lot of people took out loans without an income great enough to be able to pay it back for a long time. After banks started failing people got scared and started rapidly withdrawing all their money.

In 1929 the United States' economy started to fall. The Great Depression officially started in 1930 and lasted until the U.S. entered World War II in 1941.

Life during the Great Depression was extremely difficult. Many people lived in little shacks (like the ones shown on the next page) made from whatever materials they could find lying around. Almost a fourth of all U.S. citizens were unemployed. People often sold apples just to survive the next day. People who were able often went to the theatre to escape the harsh reality of the Depression.

Everyone was affected by the great depression. However, immigrants were the first to lose their jobs and thus they were affected more than white Americans.

 The unemployed looking for jobs

The start of America's involvement with World War II also brought the end of the Great Depression. This was mostly because we started needing soldiers and people to make weaponry, therefore creating more jobs. Also, because we started sending people overseas it created more jobs for the people in America. Large war spending also helped the economy in the U.S. to grow.
