1: March 1st 1914 - April 16th 1994
2: Ralph Elllison was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Lewis Alfred Ellison and Ida Milsap. He had one brother, Herbert Milsap Ellison. His father named him for Ralph Waldo Emerson hoping he would become a poet.
3: Ellison's schooling began at the Tuskegee Institute studying music. After three years he went to New York City to study the visual arts. | Ralph wrote a book for his teacher Richard Wright who then encouraged him to become an author. And that is how his career began.
4: Published in 1952, Ellison's only book The Invisible Man explores the theme of a man's place and identity in society. | Ellison also wrote a small number of essays but never completed another novel himself. After his death, his incomplete novel and essays were published.
5: Ralph Ellison died on April 16th 1994 of pancreatic cancer. | He was survived by his wife Fanny Ellison.
