1: Ray Douglas Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois on August 22, 1920. His family was close and loving.

2: In his youth, Ray Bradbury developed a love of magic and wanted to become a magician. Encouraged in his creativity by his family, he turned to writing at a young age and has loved writing since grade school.

3: As a child Ray met " Mr.Electrico", a circus performer and magician, at a fair. "Mr Electrico" personally inspired him to continue writing as well.

4: Bradbury has written every day since Labor Day 1932.

5: He was writing four hours a day by the time he was twelve years old.

6: He sold newspapers during the day while he worked at night writing from 1938 to 1942.

7: His first published short story was "Hollerbochen's Dilemma", printed in 1938 in Imagination! (an amateur fan magazine). He was only17 years old!

8: Ray Bradbury published four issues of his own fan magazine, "Futuria Fantasia", in 1939. He wrote much of the content himself.

9: His long career includes writing for TV, including, "The Twilight Zone", "The Odd Couple"' and "The DIck VanDyke Show".

10: He has been quoted as saying, "Libraries raise me." He is a passionate supporter of libraries and frequently speaks at libraries across the state of California, where he currently lives.

11: With no money to go to college during the Depression. He went to the library three days a week for 10 years. "I do not believe in colleges and universities. They exclude those who do not have the money to attend them."

12: Although Ray Bradbury is one of the greatest science fiction writers of his generation, he has also written works of drama and psychological realism. Bradbury has written works of horror, fantasy, and mystery, and many of his works have themes of love, childhood wonder and hope. His work has contributed to American literature on many levels, and he remains one of a very few authors who entertains both young and old alike. Mr. Bradbury's wife died a few years ago. He has four daughters and many grandchildren, he currently lives in Los Angeles, where he continues to write and speak, and enjoys painting. Although he suffered a stroke in 1999, he did not slow down in his writing. He is one of the greatest science fiction writers of our time, but he is a noted technophobe: he has never driven a car, distrusts computers, the Internet and ATM machines.
