1: For My Grandchildren As I hold you in my arms for the first time, I look down at your innocent face and tell you, "I am your Grandma" I tell you what good friends we'll become. I promise you that my heart will always be a safe haven where my love for you will know no obstacles. I will always have faith in you and believe in you. My home will always be your home. You are my second chance, sweet innocent baby. My second chance to bake cookies, and watch the sparkling anticipation in your eyes. My second chance to sit and rock a baby to sleep in my arms, experiencing that tiny heart beating next to mine. My second chance to experience the wonder of a child discovering you can walk and blow dandelions into the sky. And this time, there will be no rushing to keep schedules and clean the house. You have the advantage of my years and having gained the wisdom of knowing what's really important in life. You have the advantage that I know my place in the world and that a few cobwebs don't really matter. We'll grow old together... I'll just get there a little sooner. And someday, when I'm gone, you'll look back upon all the times we shared and smile. The word "Grandma" will always hold a special place in your heart, just as you have always held one in mine.

4: Brown Sugar Bars | Brownies | 4

5: Date Nut Bars | Heavenly Bars | Baking Instructions: Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. | Baking Instructions: Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Bake in a 9x13 at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cover with marshmallows and let them melt on top of the bars. Frosting: 4 tb cocoa 1 stick butter 5 tb milk 3 c powder sugar | 5

6: Lemon Bars | Oatmeal Bars | 6 | Additional Instructions: (Above is for the crust) Filling: combine the following and pour over crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. 1 16oz can pumpkin 1 13.5oz can evaporated milk 2 eggs 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp ginger 1/4 tsp cloves Topping: Combine 1/2 c chopped pecans with 1/2 c brown sugar, and 2 tb butter. Sprinkle over the top and bake at 350 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes. Cool until filling is set. | Pumpkin Pie Squares | Additional Instructions: The first three ingredients make the crust. Bake the crust at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Mix the remaining ingredients and pour over the baked crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until set. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

9: Applesauce Nut Bread | Baking Powder Biscuits | 9 | Baking Instructions: Beat egg, applesauce, and butter. Mix in dry ingredients and the nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. | Banana Bread

10: 10 | Cranberry Bread | Date Nut Bread

11: 11 | Maple Nut Bread | Baking Instructions: In a large bowl combine 1 cup flour, yeast, salt, and oatmeal. Mix well and add water, egg, shortening, and molasses. Blend on low until moistened. Beat 3 minutes on medium speed. By hand, gradually stir in remaining flour to make a stiff batter. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled. Place into a greased loaf pan. Cover, and let rise for 30 minutes. Bake at 375 degrees. | Oatmeal Bread | Pie Crust | For a Double Crust: 2 c Flour 1 tsp Salt 2/3 c Crisco 5-6 tb Ice Water | Mix the flour, shortening, and salt until pea size lumps form. Add the tablespoons of water one at a time and mix until dough forms.

12: Pumpkin Bread | 12 | Rhubarb Bread | Banking Instructions: Cream sugar and oil. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat well. Add dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk. Add rhubarb and nuts. Pour into two greased and floured loaf pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes.

13: Spicy Apple Cinnamon Bread | 13 | Baking Instructions: Chop apples. Allow apples to drain. Beat apples together with eggs, oil, sugar, and vanilla. Combine remaining ingredients and blend well. Bake in greased and floured loaf pans at 325 degrees for 60 minutes. Yields 4 loaves.

15: {Christmas} | ----------

16: Butter Cookies (Cut-Outs) | Date Nut Balls | 16 | 1 1/4 c flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/3 c powdered sugar 1/2 c butter 1 tb milk 1 tsp vanilla 2/3 c dates 1/2 c nuts Make 1 inch balls. Bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. Roll in powdered sugar. | 6 egg yokes 6 tb sugar 6 tb whipping cream 2 tb brandy (optional for flavor) 1/2 tsp cardamom 1 1/2c to 2c flour | Beat egg and sugar until fluffy. Whip cream. Fold in whipped cream and brandy. Add in flour. Knead carefully. Roll out and cut into small diamond shapes. Make a small hole in the center and fold one corner over to the whole to make the classic fattigmann shape. Deep fry in lard until golden yellow. | Fattigmann

17: Krumkake | Lefse | Pecan Fingers | 17

18: Heat oven to 350 degrees.. Combine all ingredients except flour in large bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Reduce speed to low; add flour. Beat until well mixed. (If dough is too soft, cover; refrigerate at least 2 hours until firm.) Press 2 to 3 teaspoonfuls of dough evenly into each 3-inch sandbakkel mold. Place molds onto cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 11 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 3 minutes. Remove cookies from molds by tapping on table or loosening with knife. Cookies can be served plain or filled with fresh fruit, fruit filling, pudding or whipped cream. | 1 c butter, softened 1/2 c sugar 1/2 c brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon almond or brandy extract 2 1/2 c flour | Sandbakkels | Spritz Cookies | 18 | 2 c flour A pinch of salt 1/2 c sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 lb butter | Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Beat together butter, vanilla, and egg. Add dry ingredients slowly. Use a cookie press to transfer dough to baking sheet. Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes.

21: Applesauce Cookies | Brown Sugar Cookies | 21

22: Crackerjack Cookies | 2 pounds good quality ground beef 2 tsp all season salt 1 tsp salt 3-4 dashes pepper 2 eggs beaten | Oatmeal Cookies | 22 | Molasses Cookies

23: Reese's Peanut Butter Chip Cookies | 23 | Sugar Cookies | Peanut Butter Cookies | 1/2 c Butter 1/2 c Brown Sugar 1/2 c Sugar 1 Egg 1 1/4c Flour | 1/2 tsp Baking Powder 1/2 tsp Baking Soda 1/4 tsp Salt 1/2 c Peanut Butter | Mix dough. Make into 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar and press with a fork. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes.

24: {Desserts} | 2

25: Apple Bundt Cake | Apple Crisp | 25 | Baking Instructions: Spread apples in a 9x13 pan. For topping mix melted butter, flour, oats, and brown sugar. Spoon over the apples. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes.

26: Cherry Crisp | Dump Cake | Jello Poke Cake | 1 pkg Yellow Cake Mix 1 3oz pkg Jello 3/4 c Boiling Water Mix and bake the cake according to package. Dissolve Jello in the boiling water. Poke deep holes on the top of the cake. Pour Jello over the cake. Top with Cool Whip. Alternate topping: 1 envelope Whipped Topping 1 small pkg instant pudding 1 1/2 c Cold Milk | 1 can Cherry Pie Filling 1 pkg Yellow Cake Mix 1 stick Butter, melted Chopped Nuts Pour the pie filling into a 13x9 pan. Sprinkle the cake mix and chopped nuts over the filling. Drizzle the melted butter over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 -35 minutes. | 26

27: Luella's Bully Pudding | 27 | Instructions: Mix together: 4 Eggs 2 c Sugar 2 c Pumpkin 3/4 c Melted Butter Add to the batter: 2 c Flour 2 tsp Baking Powder 1 tsp Baking Soda 1/2 tsp Cinnamon 1 c Nuts (optional) Bake for 35 minutes at 325 degrees. Frosting: 3 oz Cream Cheese 6 tb Butter 1 tsp Vanilla 1 tb Milk 3 c Powdered Sugar | Pumpkin Cake

28: Rhubarb Upside Down Cake | 28 | Baking Instructions: Mix Crust and press into 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Filling: Cook custard and rhubarb until custard is thick. Pour over crust and cool. Topping: For topping beat egg white until stiff. Add sugar and spread on cooled cake. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. | Rhubarb Torte

30: {Main Dishes}

31: 1 1/2 lbs. Hamburger Onion Salt and pepper 2 cans Alphabet Vegetable Soup 4-5 Potatoes, cubed 1- 15 oz. can Hunt's Tomato Sauce Water | Brown hamburger, onion, salt and pepper in a Dutch Oven. Add soup, tomato sauce, potatoes, and rinse cans with water. Bake at 350 degrees for 90 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. | Alphabet Hotdish | 2lb Hamburger 1 small can of Hunt's Tomato Sauce Ketchup Mustard Brown Sugar Vinegar Onion Salt and Pepper Brown hamburger with the onion. Add remaining ingredients to taste. Simmer until ready to serve. | Barbecues | 1 1/2 lb Hamburger Onion 1 c Chopped Celery 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup 1/4 c Soy Sauce 1 1/2 c Warm Water (rinse cans) 1/2 c Uncooked Rice 1 can Chow Mein Noodles Brown hamburger with onion, and celery in a Dutch Oven. Add soups, soy sauce, water, uncooked rice and 1/2 of the chow mein noodles, mixing well. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Top with remaining chow mein noodles and bake 15 minutes longer. | American Chop Suey Hotdish | 31

32: Boiled Dinner | Short ribs Onion Potatoes, peeled Carrots Celery 1 head of cabbage Salt and Pepper | Filling: Chicken Gravy MIxed Vegetables Dressing Crust: 2 1/4 c Bisquick 2/3 c Milk Mix all "filling" ingredients together and pour into a greased 9X13 pan. Mix the ingredients to make the crust. Pour over filling and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. | Chicken Pie (or turkey) | 32 | Place the short ribs and vegetables in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the meat and vegetables. Bring to a rolling boil. Reduce to a gentle boil. Cook covered until the vegetables are tender. | Chipped Beef on Toast | 4 TB Butter 4 TB Flour 2 c Milk 1/4 - 1/2 lb Chopped Dried Beef Salt and Pepper Toast Melt the butter with the dried beef. Add flour and stir. Add milk. Stir until thickened. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve over toast.

33: Boil macaroni in salted water. Drain under running cold water. Using a 2 quart baking dish alternate with layers of macaroni and cheese. Continue until all ingredients are used, ending with a cheese layer. Whisk milk and egg together along with the salt and pepper. Pour over the top. Cover with breadcrumbs, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until browned and cooked through. | Elbow Macaroni 2 c Cheddar Cheese Butter 1/2 c Milk 1 Egg Salt and Pepper | Macaroni and Cheese | With your hands combine hamburger, rice, salt, pepper, and onion. Form oblong meat balls and arrange for baking. Cover with tomato sauce. Cover baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. | 1lb Hamburger 1/3 c Uncooked Rice Onion, minced 1 15oz can of Hunt's Tomato Sauce Water, rinse can Salt and Pepper | Porcupines | Drain and reserve liquid from salmon. Mix egg, onion, cracker, and salmon together. Form into patties. If mixture is too dry add reserved liquid from salmon. In a frying pan heat butter. Place patties in pan. Brown on each side. Drain on paper towels and serve. | 1 Can of Salmon (14.75 oz) 1 Egg Onion, minced Saltine Crackers, crushed Butter | Salmon Patties | Butter Flour 3 c Milk 5-6 Potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1-2 c Ham, cubed Salt and Pepper Layer the potatoes and ham in a baking dish. Sprinkle around one spoonful of flour directly on top of each layer potatoes. Top with milk and a few dabs of butter. Cover the dish and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for 15-20 minutes longer. | Scalloped Potatoes Ham or Hamburger | 33

34: Swiss Steak and Boiled Potatoes | 2 lbs. Hamburger Elbow Macaroni, cooked Onion Garlic powder Salt and pepper 1 large can Hunt’s Spaghetti Sauce (Traditional) 1 small can of Hunt’s Tomato Sauce Water, to rinse cans Brown hamburger and onion in a Dutch Oven. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Add the other ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. This recipe may not be exact. Use your best judgment to ensure proper consistency. | Spaghetti Hotdish | 34 | Round steak, tenderized Onion 1 small can Hunt's Tomato Sauce 1 can Beef Broth Water, to rinse cans Salt and Pepper Flour Potatoes, peeled and boiled After tenderizing meat, dust with flour, salt, and pepper. Brown the pieces of steak with onion. Place meat in a baking dish and cover with tomato sauce, water, and beef broth. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Serve with potatoes. | Tuna Noodle Hotdish | 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup 1 can Chicken Broth 2 cans (5oz) Tuna, drained 3/4 of a package of Egg Noodles Saltine Crackers, crushed Butter Salt and Pepper Stir soups, chicken broth, tuna, cooked noodles, salt, and pepper in a baking dish. Sprinkle cracker crumbs on top and dab with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour, or until hot and bubbling.

36: {Soups, Salads, Sides}

37: Bean Soup | Tomato Soup | 37 | Chili | Vegetable Soup | Tomatoes, peeled and "cubed" 1 tsp Baking Soda Elbow Macaroni, cooked Milk Butter Salt and Peeper Cook tomatoes over medium heat until cooked down into small pieces. Add remaining ingredients. | 1 Ham Bone 1 bag Navy Beans or Northern Beans Carrots Celery Onion 1/2 stick Butter 1 can Chicken Broth Water Salt and Pepper In a large pot sauté the ham bone in a little butter while dicing the vegetables. Add the rest of the ingredients. Season and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for a couple of hours. Serve with dumplings. For dumplings Grandma used the recipe on the back of the Bisquick box. | 1 lb. Hamburger Onion Celery 1 can Diced Tomatoes 1 can Hunt's Tomato Sauce 2 cans Kidney Beans, drained 1 tsp Sugar Salt Worcestershire Sauce Chili Powder Brown the hamburger and sauté the onion and celery together. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and kidney beans. Add seasonings and water. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook until vegetables are tender. | 1 Soup Bone 1/2 bag of Navy Beans 1 can Diced Tomatoes 1 can Beef Broth Onion Carrots Celery Potatoes, diced Rutabaga, diced Water Salt and Pepper 2 Bay Leaves Marjoram and Thyme (optional) Sauté the soup bone in butter while cutting up the vegetables. Add the vegetables, tomatoes, beef broth, seasoning, and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

38: Taffy Apple Salad | Potato Salad | 38 | Tapioca Salad | Cucumbers and Vinegar | 6 Snickers fun sized bars, chopped 6 Apples 1 5oz pkg Vanilla Instant Pudding 1/2 c Milk 1 12oz tub Cool Whip Whisk vanilla pudding packet, milk, and Cool Whip together, until well combined. Chop up apples and Snickers. Reserve some of the candy for garnish. Stir apples and candy into the pudding mixture. Garnish. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving. | 1 3oz pkg Raspberry Jello 1 3oz. pkg Tapioca Pudding 1 3oz. pkg Vanilla Pudding 3 c Water 1 16 oz tub Cool Whip Raspberries Whisk the two pudding mixes and water together and bring to a boil in a saucepan. Stir in Jello. Allow for the mixture to cool completely. Mix with a package of cool whip and raspberries. Chill prior to serving. Substitute Strawberry Jello and fruit for Strawberry Fluff. | 2 large cucumbers white vinegar salt water Peel and slice cucumbers. Place into a small bowl. Add water and salt. Add vinegar to taste. | Potatoes, peeled and boiled Onion Celery Boiled Eggs, sliced and divided Miracle whip Sour Cream Salt and Pepper Cut up potatoes into a bowl. Add onion, celery and some of the sliced eggs. Stir in Miracle Whip and sour cream. Salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with remaining egg slices. Refrigerate until serving.

39: Baked Beans | Cheesy Potatoes | 39 | Cranberry Relish | 1 bag Northern Beans Onion Butter Water Cook the first 4 ingredients together until beans are tender. Drain off some of the water, add the remaining ingredients and bake at 350 degrees. | Molasses Brown sugar Bacon, cooked and chopped Ketchup | 1-2 bags of cranberries 1-2 Oranges Sugar Grind whole oranges and cranberries together. Add sugar to taste | 1 1/2 bags Frozen Potatoes, cubed 1 can Cream of Chicken Soup 1 can Cheese Soup 16oz Sour Cream Cheddar Cheese, shredded Corn Flakes, crushed (optional) In a 13x9 pan mix together potatoes, soups, sour cream, and shredded cheese. Salt and pepper to taste. Top with additional shredded cheese and cornflakes. Dab with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for an hour, or until potatoes are tender.

40: Dressing | 40 | Mixed Vegetables | Scalloped Corn | Sweet Potatoes | 1 bag Brownberry with Sage Dressing Onion Celery, cut finely 1 stick Butter, divided Chicken Broth An alternative to broth would be the water from cooking the neck and liver from the chicken/turkey Sauté onion, and celery with butter until tender. In a baking dish mix all ingredients together. Dab with butter on top. Bake at 350 degrees until heated through and slightly toasted. | 3-4 cans Cream Style Corn 1 sleeve Saltine Crackers, crushed Milk Salt and Pepper In a baking dish mix corn, milk (rinse cans), and add crackers (reserving some for topping). Salt and pepper to taste. Top with remaining crackers. Dab with butter. Bake at 350 degrees until bubbling and crackers have started to brown. | 1 can Sweet Potatoes Brown Sugar Butter Orange Juice Add sweet potatoes to a baking dish with some of the juice from the can. Add brown sugar, butter, and a splash of orange juice. Bake at 350 degrees. | 1 20oz bag Frozen Mixed Vegetables 1 can Cream of Celery Soup Butter Velveeta Cheese Seasoned Croutons Salt and Pepper Cook the vegetables according to the bag and drain. Place the cooked vegetables into a greased baking dish. Add the butter and let melt. Season the vegetables and add soup. Layer cheese on top. Cover with croutons. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

42: Brandy Slush | Hot Fudge | 42 | Olive Spread | Punch | 1 stick Butter 1 square Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate 1/2 c Sugar Milk Melt butter and chocolate in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Once completely melted add sugar and a dab of milk. You can add additional milk as needed, careful not to make it too thin. Bring to a boil. Serve over ice cream. | 8oz Cream Cheese Green Olives, chopped Olive Juice, from jar Nuts, chopped (optional) Chop green olives. Mix softened cream cheese into the olives, adding a splash of the olive juice. Serve with rye bread or crackers. | Place tea bags in a small bowl. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and pour over tea bags. Cover and steep for 5 minutes. Discard tea bags. Transfer tea to a large container. Stir in the brandy, lemonade concentrate, orange juice concentrate, sugar, and remaining 5 cups of water. Freeze overnight or until set. Serve in a glass with 7-up. Note: When preparing we usually use Wild Berry Tea. | 1 12oz can Froze Lemonade Concentrate 1 12oz can Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate 7-up | 4 Tea Bags (green or black) 7 c Water, divided 2 c Brandy 2 c Sugar
