1: These topics are about important and highlighted events from 1961. They are all from the song "We didn't start the fire", by Billy Joel.. This book is for our social studies project to explain in a fun way all these different topics.

2: Stranger in a strange land- STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND is one of the best sellers’ science fictional book made in the 1960’s. It was written by the author; Robert A. Heinlein and it was published in 1961. It was really good and that’s why it was such a big highlight in those times. Stranger in a strange land is a book about an Alien coming from planet Mars to planet earth. The Alien feels weird to be in such a “strange” land and it explains how it would be weird for an Alien from outer space to come to a different world, and how it’s weird for them also, just like how it would be weird for us to go to planet Mars.

3: Bob Dylan- Bob Dylan is a famous musician from Duluth Minnesota, US that played rock, folk, blues, country, and gospel music. He was very famous in the 1960’s but especially in 1961. He was famous for his song “Blowin’ in the Wind”, and many others. He was born on May 24th, 1941. He played many instruments such as guitar, bass, harmonica, keyboard, piano, but he mostly sang. He is also known as Elston, Tedham, Porterhouse, Blind boy Grunt, Lucky Wilbury/Boo Wilbury, Elmer Johnson, Sergei Petrov, Jack Frost, Jack Fate, but his real name is Robert Milkwood Zimmermann. He also sang a song with Joan Baez in the March of Civil Rights in Washington DC, 1963. From 1973 to 1978, he signed contract to be with Columbia Records. He won 13 Grammy prizes such as best folk album, best male rock voice, Album of the year, etc. He also won an Oscar; the best song in 2000, which was from the movie “Wonder Boys”.

4: Judy Garland- Judy Garland was a famous singer and actress in 1961. Garland was born in Minnesota, USA on the 10th of June. She was in 41 different movies, including her most famous films of all; The Wizard of Oz. On April 23rd, 1961 Judy Garland performed her concert in Carnegie Hall in New York. She was very well-known after that concert. This concert was also known as “The greatest night in show business history.” It turned out to be a huge success and broke many box office records in those days. Before this, Judy Garland was only an actress but after the great concert in NY she turned into a stage show girl. Although in 1959, she was overweight and suffered from alcohol and drug abuse and she was really sick, but then she lost weight and had a vocal rest. Two months after this concert she got sick again and went back to drug and alcohol, and that was when her career ended. But that amazing concert was her biggest highlight and was a huge success in 1961.

6: Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) which was built or used to enclose the city of west Berlin. The Berlin wall separates West Berlin with East Berlin. It was built because more than 2.6 million East Germans to West Berlin of West Germany from 1949 to 1961. So it was built to keep them from escaping. It is also known as the “death strip”, it’s called like that because whoever attempted to go past it would definitely be killed for breaking the rules of trying to get to the other side without permission.

8: Bay of Pigs Invasion The Bay of Pigs invasion was basically about the people of Cuba and their attempt (which by the way failed) to overthrow their president; Fidel Castro because of his way of government, through communism. When the Cuban’s came to the bay near from where Castro was; they came with their ships and started throwing bombs at the guards and killed many of Fidel Castro’s men and so that is when Castro decided to kill them and/or take them as prisoners for attempting to kill their own president. And obviously the people reacted negatively towards this so they tried to kick him out of his position as president but apparently Castro had too much power over everybody. This occurred in 1961, on the 17th of April. They did this because the Cubans needed a good place to live in where there’s a chance to live peacefully.

11: Hemingway Ernest Miller Hemingway was the most famous American writer and journalist in the 2oth century. He was born on July 21st 1899. He’s made 6 full stories and some other short stories. He was famous because of his style of writing, which was also known as the “Iceberg theory” which was about understatement and economy. Also there were three non-fiction autobiographical works that were published after he died. He wrote stories about outdoorsmen, expatriates, soldiers and other action men. He has lived in Paris, Cuba and Key West. He produced a lot of his work between the mid- 1920’s and the mid-1950’s. Before all of this; Hemingway joined the red cross recruitment in Italy to be a ambulance driver and was a foreign correspondent in Paris. Then he began his life as a writer, writing about all the things that happened in his life and to other soldiers he knew, and told stories, tragedies, etc about everything that happened in the war and how it was like to be a soldier, guard, executer, etc. Later on he decided to himself with a shot gun on 1961, July 2nd.

12: Adolf Eichmann Adolf Eichmann was a war criminal/German Nazi in WWII that was born on March 19th, 1906 and died May 31, 1962. He was also known as the “Architect of the holocaust”. In 1932 he became part of the Nazi party. And so in 1933, when the Nazis took power Adolf was with the active duty SS regiments. In 1934, he became a Nazi security police, which was a very powerful organization by that time. In 1937, he then was promoted to be the head squad leader for his job. Then in WWII, he was assigned to transport the Jews to the ghettos. He was a war criminal after that, by using his knowledge of extermination and “security”. He then was charged for massive Jew execution. But he ran away to Argentina and later on was found and hanged in Israel on May 31st 1962.
