1: What Are Cells? | Cells are the basic unit of life.

2: Scientists | Robert Hooke | Theodor Schwann

3: Rudolf Virchow | Matthias Schleiden

4: Matthias Schleiden (1838)- This scientist concluded that all plants are made of cells. He dealt with cell formation, and plants.

5: Theodor Schwann (1839)- He concluded that all animals are made of cells. He also discovered the digestive enzyme, pepsin in 1836.

6: Rudolf Virchow (1855)- He concluded that all cells came from pre-existing cells. In 1859, he made a book called Cell Pathology that became the foundation for all microscopic study of disease.

7: Robert Hooke (1665)- When looking at a piece of cork under a microscope, he discovered cells. He then named a cell a cell.

8: Three Principles of Cell Theory! | 1. All organisms consists of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms. 3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.

10: Prokaryotic Cells VS. | Prokaryotic cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus and instead of having chromosomal DNA, their genetic information is in a circular loop called plasmid.

11: Eukaryotic Cells | Eukaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus, and membrane-bound structures called organelles.

12: Plant Cells | Animal Cells | -Shape is round -Cilia -Only small vacuoles -Centrioles are present in all animals -Only cell membrane -Flagella may be found in some cells -Lysosomes in the cytoplasm | -Shape is rectangular -Chloroplast -Has large central vacuole taking up 90 percent of cell volume -Cell Wall -Cell Membrane -Flagella may be found in some cells -Plastids

14: 5 Cell Structures: -Golgi Apparatus: possesses and packages proteins -Cell Wall: found in plants and prokayrotes, provides additional support -Flagella: whip-like tail for movement -Nuclear Envelope: surrounds the nucleolus -Cilia: short hair like projections for movement

15: 5 Cell Structures: -Ribosomes: make proteins -Cytoplasm: watery substance found in cells -Centriole- helps with cell division -Lysosome: contains enzymes that digest materials in the cell -Vacuole: small in animals, large in plants, stores food, waste, and water

16: Homeostasis- A state of balance in the body

17: Cell Membrane- Made of lipids, surrounds the cell, and regulates what enters and leaves the cell
