FC: AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM | DANIELLE HAMMER GEFFEL | Museum Visit Photo Essay

VIEW FROM KEY HIGHWAY, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

A relatively new institution, the American Visionary Art Museum's design is due in part to the Founder & Director as she collaborated with architects during the design phase (Museum History). In addition, she was also instrumental in helping to select the commissioned sculpture that you see here. | ARCHITECTURE and OUTDOOR SCULPTURE | Director/Founder

AVAM MOSAIC FACADE | "The director sets the "tone" of the museum" (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996, p. 85).

VISITOR SERVICES | Membership staff | Often the first point of contact for museum visitors, the information desk is a great place to find information related to membership and museum events (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996, p. 145). The AVAM's visitor services staff provided me with details about accessible areas, restaurant hours, and upcoming exhibitions. | FAN CLUB- an area designed for guests to gather information regarding member benefits and museum 'house' rules (i.e. no cameras).

PHANG NGA BAY, PHUKET | November 7 | THE MOUNTAIN TEMPLE, WAT ARAT | November 8 | GALLERY DISPLAYS | Curator | Specialized in a particular topic or area of the museum's collection, curator(s) are responsible for the selection, preservation, and often the exhibition of objects (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996, p. 81). It is likely that different curators were instrumental in the displays above as one features a singular object while the other houses a group of objects.

GIFT SHOP | Museum Shop staff | "...often the first or last stop for the museum visitor" (Glaser & Zenetou, 1996, p. 116).

SIDESHOW SHOP | The Sideshow Shop, a unique and crowded gift shop. occupies nearly half of the first floor of the AVAM. Here, visitors often spend a great deal of time rifling through both vintage and new keepsakes. | Like the museum restaurant, the Sideshow Shop helps to boost the AVAM's income.

SCULPTURE BARN | Special Events staff | Located between Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor, the American Visionary Art Museum is a picturesque venue in which many decide to host events. The Sculpture Barn and Wildflower Garden provide unique locations for weddings, holiday parties, and reunions.

WILDFLOWER GARDEN | Special Events staff | With an events staff member on hand, the AVAM provides support related to the organization and execution of special events, both public and private in nature. Apart from non museum related events, the AVAM also hosts annual sidewalk sales and a Kinetic Sculpture Race, both which could not continue without the help of the special events team.

HOFFBERGER FAMILY FOUNDATION LIBRARY | Library staff | The Hoffberger Family Library is a private area of the AVAM, available only by special request. Utilized primarily by museum staff, the library houses text related to the AVAM's permanent collection as well as popular art movements.
