FC: Skeletal System, Nervous system, & Cardiovascular System

By Jordan Weaver | Anatomy & Physiology

Skeletal System | Bones provide support for our body and create shape, along with protecting vital organs | What do bones do?

There are 5 types of bones... | Long | Short | Flat | Irregular | Sasamoid

The Five Types | Long bones: | Make up limbs and appendages. | Short Bones: | Protects and helps create movement of the limbs | Flat Bones: | Major protection of important organs. | Irregular Bones: | Many jobs: Protecting nervous tissue, multiple anchor points for muscle attachment, & tongue attachment. | Sasamoid Bones: | A bone embedded within a tendon. Helps keeps the join from flattening during tension.

Femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpals, metatarsals, phalanges. | Carpals & tarsals. | [LONG] | [SHORT] | [FLAT] | [IRREGULAR] | [SESAMOID] | occipital, parietal, frontal, nasal, lacrimal, vomer, scapula, hip, sternum, & ribs | vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, temporal, sphenoid, ethmoid, zygomatic, maxilla, mandible, palatine, & hyoid. | Patella, pisiform,

Nervous System | The nervous system carries out messages from parts of our body to our brain and back. It creates our senses.

There are 3 parts of every neuron: | Dendrites | Cell Body | Axon

Parts of a neuron | Dendrites: | Receive info from another cell and transmits the message to the cell body. | Cell Body: | Axon: | Contains the nucleus, mitochondria, and other organelles. | Conducts messages away from the cell body.

Messages are carried by negatively charged ions on the inside of the membrane and positively charged ions on the outside. When the oppositely charged ions pass each other, it creates an electrical pulse, stimulating the ions thus sending a message through a neuron. | The sending of messages between nerves is called a SYNAPSE. Messages travel as an electrical action potential. The spaces between two cells is the SYNAPTIC CLEFT. NEUROTRANSMITTERS are stored in small synaptic vessicles clustered at the stop of the ion. | The NEUROTRANSMITTERS are chemicals released from the tip of an axon into the synaptic cleft when a nerve impulse arrives; it stimulates or inhibits the next neuron.

Cardiovascular System | Blood circulates from veins and arteries to and from the heart. It gives the rest of the body the blood and nutrients it needs.

There are 3 main parts:: | Veins | Arteries | The Heart

Parts of the Cardio- system | Veins: | The Heart: | Arteries: | A muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions. | Blood vessels that carry blood TOWARD the heart. | Blood vessels that carry blood AWAY from the heart.

Blood vessels are round because it helps the flow of blood go more smoothly. | WOO BLANK SPACE. :D
