FC: The Killing Machines of Castles. | By: Nate Burkhardt and Matt Tobash

Castles started being built in the year 800. They used this type of building for defense because there were so many safety mechanisms. They stopped building castles around the 1400s because gun powder and bigger weapons were becoming more common and most of the defense mechanisms that the castle had became useless. | Castles

This weapon was mostly used as a watchtower. On top of the stair turret you could shoot arrows down and rain them down on the invaders of the castle. You could also, in some stair turrets shoot through arrow loops down on the people below. The stair turret would be the first place where the attackers would be spotted so that when a guard sees the invader attacking he can warn the people to be ready for battle. | This weapon used for defending a castle in a 15th century design. It relies on springy arms to throw a missile.Catapults were made just to increase the distance and the penetration of the missile being shot. The medieval people did this just by strengthening the bow that propelled the missile through the air. | Stair Turret | Catapult

A Murder Whole was also called a gatehouse. This weapon was used so that castle passageways could be flanked by huge missiles that were dropped through a whole on all the attackers that try to come through the passageway. | A draw bridge was used for stopping attackers when they got through the first wall. It could be raised so that the enemies cold not get into the castle unless they swim through the moat and then climb up a incline in the ground. | Drawbridge | Murder Hole

Moat | A moat was a body of water that surrounded a castle. It was used to defend the castle from foot soldiers so they could not get in to the castle by running right in. They could get in if they swam in.

Most Medieval castles had tall stone walls. The walls where usually several meters thick. This was so the attacker could not easily just use a battering ram to get through the walls. | Arrows were one of the main weapons in the middle ages. This weapon was used for sticking arrows through a hole and being able to shoot while staying in safety behind a stone wall. | Arrow Loops | Castle Walls

Dear Diary | The Vikings' are are attacking and we are trying to set up all our defensive mechanisms. We are putting damp cowhides over all our wood things so they can not burn anything down. Our drawbridge is being raised so they can not cross the the moat but I still think we are in big trouble. They have just started attacking , I have to go now. There is a sword over my neck. | Sincerely: Nate

To the King | King , we need more soldiers. I have a feeling that the Vikings are coming. I know no one believes me but they are coming. I know this because the Vikings hit the manor right next to us. Help us before we die. | Sincerely: Matt

Castle Summary | Overall, castles were very important in the middle ages. One of the most help full defensive mechanisms in this time period was the thick and tall castle walls. The castle walls were one of the most help full defensive mechanisms in the medieval time period because they made sure that the attackers could not just run right into the manor and attack and take everything that the manor had. Another defensive mechanism that had the same use was the drawbridge. But overall the design of the castle and everything that it had to help protect the manor was a very use full source in the middle ages and probably the best one to.
