FC: CELLS | Sam Heldman Savannah Van Sant

Cell Theory | Cells are the building blocks of life. | All living things are made of cells. | All cells are produced by living cells.

Contributions of Scientists | Anton Van Leeuwenhoek invented the microscope. He also recorded some of the first observations of bacteria. | Robert Hooke was known for his advancement of microscopes. He also coined the term "cells".

Charles Darwin was known for his theory of evolution. | Gregor Mendel was a geneticist that created some basic laws of heredity. | Theodor Schwann discovered a digestive enzyme for protein.

Prokaryotic | Prokaryotes | NO nucleus. DNA is spread through the cell. Spikes on the edges and tail at the end. Are unicellular and have a cell wall.

Eukaryotic | Eukaryotic means: | Membrane bound organelles. Orderly nucleus. Not unicellular, multicellular. | "Truly Nucleus"

Plant Cells | Plant cells have a rectangular shape. Plants cells contain chloroplasts to make their own food. Plant cells have a cell wall and a cell membrane surrounding the perimeter of the cell for protection and structure. Plants cell contain a central vacuole that takes up almost 90% of the cell volume.

Animal Cells | Eukaryotic | Animal cells have an irregular, round shape. Animal cells do not contain chloroplasts, because they are not capable of photosynthesis. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, but they do have a cell membrane. Animal cells contain small vacuoles.

Cell Structures | The Endoplasmic Reticulum moves proteins and other substances throughout the cell. | The Nucleus stores the genetic material. | Ribosomes are found in the rough ER. They produce proteins. | The Mitochondria breaks down sugar molecules absorbed from food to release energy. | The Golgi Apparatus modifies the proteins received from the ER, encloses them in a new sac, and moves them around the cell.

The Cell Membrane gives the cell a definite shape, holds the cytoplasm, and controls what moves in and out of the cell. | Vacuoles store food, water, and waste. | Chloroplasts are found in plant cells only. They use energy from the sun to produce food for the plant through the process of photosynthesis. | The Cytoskeleton strengthens and maintains the shape of the cell. | Cytoplasm supports and protects the cell organelles

Cell Membrane | Separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment. aAllows certain things into and out of the cell. The cell membrane is like the cell's bouncer.

Homeostasis | Homeostasis inside a cell occurs when a cell is in perfect equal balance within itself. All the structures of the cell must be functioning properly and consistently. If a cell does not maintain homeostasis, it dies.
