Ancient River Valley Civilization; Two rivers that flow through mountains started the ancient river valley civilization. 6000 years ago, the waters of these rivers provided the life blood that allowed the formation of farming settlements. These grew into villages and then cities. The shape of the regions curvy-ness and the richness of it's land led scholars to call it the fertile crescent. Two important rivers called the Tigris and Euphrates rivers flooded Mesopotamia at least once a year. As the flood water receded, it left a thick bed of mud called silt. The first group of people that created a civilization were the Sumerians. Each city and the surrounding land they controlled formed a city-state. A city-state works like how an independent country does today. The Sumerian culture formed its own religion of Polytheism, a belief in many gods.

What if people did not learn how to farm? If people had not learned how to farm, then resources for food would be really low and the Agricultural Revolution, revolution of growing crops would have never started. If no one knew how to farm, then villages and communities would still be hunting. Animals would be disapearing one by one then no one could hunt for important resources and there would be no more food. Farming is very important because then there would be more food and resources for clothing.

Classical Greece and Rome; A long time ago, Greece was not a united country. There were different islands people lived on. After the sea people came into Greece, the Borians moved into the area. Soon they saw the rise of the polis, or city-state. In many of these city-states, kings and queens would rule. This government is called a monarchy. Spartan and Athens were two powerful city-states. The Athens focus more on art and individuals and created a democracy.

What if Athens had not embraced democracy? If Athens had not embraced democracy, then Athens let a lone all of Greece would not have had a set government with laws. It would have soon become a dictatored city. Athens democratic government helps regulate the city and sets laws that help keep Athens in order. If they did not have that government, they would have embraced a city of chaos and unfair ruling, let alone no equality within the people.

Post Classical Asia/Africa; Africa is the second largest continent in the world. It stretches 4,600 miles from east to west and 5,000 miles from North to South. One important desert in Africa is the Sahara. The Sahara is a flat, gray, waste land of scattered rocks and gravel. The largest amount of people live in savannas, or grassy plains. Africa's savanna is not only an endless plain. It includes mountainous high-lands ,swampy tropical stretches, and the land at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, the Sahel. In Arabic, Sahel means "coastline". The ancient North African people named it the Sahel because it seemed to them a vast ocean of sand. Africa's earliest peoples were nomadic hunter-gatherers. They roamed from place to place seeking sources of food.Today some of the San of the Kalahari desert and the BaMbuti of the rain forest of Congo are still hunter-gatherers.

What if the Mongols had not opened the Silk Road to safe travels? If the Mongols had not opened the silk road for safe travels, then there would never have been a road for other countries to trade and exchange goods on the silk road. The Mongols would have also been under major attacks from other colonies or major dynasty groups. As well, the Mongols would have lost their power. The Silk road was the Mongols only way for safe travels.

The Middle Ages/ Medieval Europe; In this time period, there was the fall of the Roman empire and many things went wrong. The trade between countries was going down as well as the cities and population. This was a time where people looked upon religion and went to church. The Church was a big help at this time and they built religious communities called Monasteries. Also they had a social system; the King, Church officials, Nobles, Knights, and Peasants. The lord or landowner granted land called a fief.

What if the Black Plague did not attack Western Europe? If the Black Plague did not attack Western Europe then there would have not been a fall in Europe. If the Black Plague hadn't hit Europe then our social system wouldn't have become stronger and more advanced. As well, the economy wouldn't have become more powerful. Think of it this way, we would have had flying cars by now if the Black Plague did not happen!

The Renassaince; The Renassaince means the rebirth of Europe, the time where Europe awakes from a deep sleep. They came out of the sad depressing stage and wanted to enjoy life. This all led to humanism, it focused on human achievements. There art became more vivid and colorful. It showed the perspective as well. Many ideas spread at this time, and Gutenberg, invented the printing press. This machine helped make hundreds of copies of the same thing of a single work.

What if Gutenberg hadn't invented the printing press? If Gutenberg hadn't invented the printing press, then there would be no way of making several copies at the same time. It would take very long to write out all of the work. Children would not have learned as much and copying books would have been difficult. If the printing press wasn't invented then our economy would not be as advanced now.

Enlightenment; The Renaissance inspired a lot of different fields to explore and question things about church, religion, and other things that have been established in the past. This led to the Scientific Revolution, which was a new way of thinking about the natural world. A lot of people were willing to stand up and make a difference such as Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, and Francis Bacon. Copernicus's heliocentric theory, or sun centered theory did not exactly explain why the plants orbited the way they did. Thanks to Galileo's new telescope, it helped prove a lot about the planets and supported Copernicus's theories.

What if the Enlightenment ideas were not embraced by the colonists? If philospohers did not question ideas from things that have been established in the past, then we wouldn't have revolutions as well as the United States. Our political system would have been corrupted and we wouldn't have the basic equality rights and a fair government. Everything would have been enclosed. If the Enlightenment hadn't happened then our world would only have one type of government and one law.

World War 1/ The Great War; World War 1 was a major war that started in Europe and went from 1914 to 1918. There were two different groups of countries that were in war with each other. The countries that are friends are called alliances. Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy were the Triple Alliances. Great Britain, France, and Russia were called the Triple Entente. The reason these countries went to war was because the leader of Serbia, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated. It got worse when the countries started fighting in the region in northern France called the western front. Opposing armies in the western front had dug up parallel holes to protect themselves from the enemy. This stage was called Trench Warfare.

What if Germany had not been blamed for causing World War 1? If Germany had not been blamed for World War 1, then they would not have to pay well over a billion dollars. That's a lot of money! They wouldn't have gone through the hard economy because of trying to pay for all the destruction due to the war. As well, there wouldn't have been a World War. New inventions would not have been discovered for later, and other revolutions following that would not have started. And let's not forget, even then if World War 1 hadn't started, then there wouldn't have been a World War 2, and leading up later, the Cold War.

World War 2; During the 1930's, Adolph Hitler played a a big role in World War 2. After world war one, Germany was blamed for pretty much everything and Hitler came in and said that he would fix Germany and they will blame the Jews for all there mistakes. This Nazi dictator kept grabbing new territories and got them. A while back, Stalin signed a 10-year nonaggression pact with Hitler saying that they will not attack each other. Hitler attempted many battles and either won or backed down. There was one battle that he was willing to win. As a part of their new order for Europe, the Nazi's believed that aryans, the German people, were a "master race." They said that Jews were inferior. This message from Hitler led to the Holocast, the killing of civilians, mostly Jews.

What if the United States had not dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan? If the United States had not dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan, then there wouldn't have been as much chaos and trouble. Thing would have most likely been more peaceful. Japan also wouldn't have felt the need to attack back, therefore things would have been peaceful. We, the U.S wouldn't have gone through all the trouble after the WW2 to attack Japan. We also might have gained a peace treaty with Japan earlier.

Cold War; The Cold War was a political conflict, economic competition, and had military tensions between the United States and Russia. In June 1945, they set aside their differences and joined the 48 other countries called the United Nations. This organization protected the nations from aggression. There was an alliance that formed during the Cold War called the, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The nations promised to meet an attack on any NATO member with armed forces. The Soviet Union viewed NATO as a threat. As a response, the Soviets formed an alliance system in 1955. It was known as the Warsaw Pact. This alliance included Soviet Union, Poland, East Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. In June 1947, U.S. secretary of state George Marshall, proposed that America give aid to any European country that needed it. This was called the Marshall Plan.

What if the Soviet Union had landed on the moon first and not the United States? If the Soviet Union had landed on the moon first and not the United States, then we would not have figured out other ways to send people to outer space. Because the United States is so competitive, it helped us achieve a goal of figuring out how to build a rocket and send a man on the moon, just to beat the Soviets. If the Soviets had beat us, then we would not have been as advanced in technology, and NASA, a space program in the U.S would not have been discovered as a well known Space Program.
