1: They had one of the most powerful militaries in the world at the time. At the height of the empire during the reign of Darius, the Persian Empire extended from modern Egypt and Libya to the Indus river and from the Caucasus Mountains to the Arabian peninsula. In the 5th century BCE, it is estimated that 50 million or 20% of the world population lived in the Achaemenid Empire | About Persia
2: Social Issues | There were a significant number of slaves. Land owning families held some local power but the king had ultimate power. Also, patriarchal women could own property subordinate in law.
3: Technological Innovations | They had built bridges, roads, aqueducts, and many weapons of mass destruction. Their warfare was actually quite advanced.
4: Economic Success | There was a spread of iron technology. The arrow tips, spear tips, swords, shields, and armor. They traded iron for other foreign goods.
5: Political Stability | There was no democracy, but an absolute monarchy that denied the individual, common man his say in political life. Because the king controlled such as large area there was unification of the middle east.
6: Positive History | They took over much of what we now call the Middle East. There were easily able to put down an rebellions that tried to do anything.
7: Negative History | They tried to conquer Classical Greece but failed, although they had some successes in the north of Greece. Fought with many neighboring countries. Won most battles/Lost very few.
