1: Welcome to my Mixbook technology curriculum project! The following pages are examples of work that students might create and publish following the directions of my Comparing Cultures lesson plan found at the end of this Mixbook.Technology is something students are familiar with and enjoy. They can create projects that are fun to create and that can be published to share with other students, family, and friends. In addition to being viewed on the Web, a Mixbook creation can be printed out as a hard copy book that can be housed in the classroom, presented to the school library, or purchased by parents and guardians as a keepsake of their student's work. -Tricia Fisher

2: The Mayan civilization was formed as early as 1500 BC. They lived in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. The Mayans developed astronomy, calendar systems and writing. They also created the first zero in their number system. The Mayans worshiped many nature gods. The Mayans built massive pyramids where they did most of their religious ceremonies. | The Mayans

3: In about AD 300 to 900, the people living in some of the largest cities mysteriously abandoned their homes. Researchers still do not know where these people went or why they left.

4: The Aztec were the rulers of what is now Mexico between about 1300 and 1500 AD. They built a city on an island that they called Tenochtitlan. When their island became too small they created enormous rafts tied to the island for people to live on. The Aztecs were ruled by a royal family headed by a king. | The Aztec

5: The Aztecs king made his people pay expensive taxes. He also sacrificed certain men for for religious practices. The people were very unhappy with this treatment. The people joined together with Spanish explorers and overthrew the Aztec king.

6: In the Andes Mountains around A.D. 1200 the Incan civilization began. Their capital city was called Cuzco. This was one of the the largest empires in the world and it was ran by their king. The king was named Pachacuti. Everyone in the empire spoke the same language; Quechua. This language is still spoken in some areas today. The king had many men who ran different parts of the empire. The king made the same rules for everyone in the empire. | The Inca

7: It has been discovered that Inca doctors performed skull surgery without infection or death being a result. In A.D. 1533 the Spanish arrived in South America and invaded the Inca. The empire fell quickly but the people remained. To this day there are still descendants of the Incan empire. They continue to speak Quechua and practice the ways of the Inca.

8: Lesson Plan

9: This lesson, titled Comparing Cultures, will be covering the cultures of the Mayans, Aztecs, and Inca. The lesson covers social studies, reading, writing, and technology. There are state standards aligned with each of these subjects on the following pages. The students should be able to examine and compare the three cultures, decode unknown words, paraphrase and summarize, compose text with details, and analyze websites to determine reliability and relevance. The lesson is intended for a sixth grade classroom and should take at least five days.

11: DETAILED LESSON DESCRIPTION GLE #1: Elementary Social Studies: The SWBAT examine and compare the cultures of the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incan by doing internet research and compiling the information into a Mixbook. (GLE Social Studies, Missouri, United States and World History, Strand 3b. Knowledge of continuity and change in the history of the world, Concept E - Grade 6) (Performance Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 2.1, 4.5) GLE #2: Elementary Communication Arts: The SWBAT decode unknown words in text, summarize, infer, and paraphrase. (GLE Communication Arts, Reading, Strand 1 Develop and apply skills and strategies to the reading process, Concept G - Grade 6) (Performance standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 2.1, 4.5) GLE #3: Elementary Communication Arts: The SWBAT compose text with strong ideas and specific details. 12: STUDENT ASSESSMENT Students will be completing a Mixbook to show their understanding and research of the listed cultures. PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Rubric COLLABORATION Librarians and/or Technology staff can help students in using computers and conducting their research. LESSON IMPLEMENTATION Length of Unit (hours, days): Five days Prerequisite Skills: Students must be able to use a computer and know how to find relevant and true information. ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS ELL/IEP Students: Students will be able to work with a partner. Assistive Technology Needs: Students will have help from the teacher or aid. MANAGEMENT/ORGANIZATION TIPS: Sign-up for at least four-five days in the computer lab/library. Ask the students to bring notebooks to take notes rather than printing information. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES REQUIRED FOR UNIT Computers Paper/Pencil TECHNOLOGY Web-based resources (name and link)

13: Day 1: To begin the lesson, the teacher will present pictures to the class from the three different cultures. A map will be shown with each civilization's empire marked. The teacher will discuss what continent/country these places are now. The teacher will then tell the students that they are going to become researchers. They will be researching an ancient civilization using the internet and a fun program called Mix Book. Each student will pick one of the three civilizations (Mayan, Incan, Aztec). Students with special needs will be allowed a partner. The teacher will explain the rubric for the Mix Book and let the students know what is expected of them. The class will move on to the computer lab/library to begin research. The first day the students will be expected to pick their civilization and find at least three websites where they can gather information. The students will be given a list of search engines they can use. They will need to use their prior knowledge of how to find relevant and true information. The students will also be given an overview of how to use and be given time to play with the features. Day 2: During day 2, students will begin taking notes from the websites they are researching and collect images into a file that can be used for their Mix Book. Once students feel they have met all of the rubric's obligations they may begin putting the information on the Mix Book. Day 3: Students will either begin their Mix Book or continue the one they started the class period prior to this one. This day will be spent on students compiling their research and writing it in their own words. Students should be near finished at this point. Day 4: During this class period, students should be putting the finishing touches on their Mix Book and making it ready to turn in. When they are finished they will be copying down the link to their Mix Book and handing it in to the teacher. Day 5: The students will be presenting their books to the rest of the class.
