FC: Immigration To America project. By: Maren Zaczkiewicz
My Immigrant's name is Maren Zaczkiewicz. She came to America from Poland. She was looking forward to a long, rich, happy life in this new country. It was so unlike her own, and everyday, she wrote in her diary. | Her diary was translated to English for you by myself. | She had meant to send these entries as letters.
My dear family, I set sail just the other day. The boat is really crowded and smelly. There are probably over 2,000 people on board. Being in steerage is the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in my life. Worse than cleaning out the cow houses. I shall write again. LOVE, Maren
My dear family, the entire ship is crowded. The food supply that I've brought is almost depleted and I don't know what I will do when it runs out. There isn't much water left either, they would have done better, rationing it. I shall continue to write, LOVE, Maren
My dear family, I am getting quite sick. Being on this ship is not at all healthy. I cannot do work, I can barely move around without falling over someone. The rest of my food was stolen weeks ago. I have not eaten in about three weeks. I will try to write again, LOVE, Maren
Land was sighted family! I will finally get to get off this ship, and Uncle John will be waiting there for me. Oh! we are unloading.
Unfortunately, My immigrant never made it to America. She never sent the letters that she worked so hard to compose.
