1: the colonist rebelled against their parent country by declaring independence . But the American democratic experiment did not begin in 1776. The COLONIES had been practicing limited forms of self-government since the early1600's. England tried to regulate trade, and forbid colonies from trading with other European countries. England also maintained the right to tax the colonies. | the colonies
2: We hold t | We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Then bloodshed at Lexington and concord marked a turning point for the colonists. The colonies choice was clear, they declare their independence, which would lead to war
3: Those who defended slavery rose to the challenge set forth by the Abolitionists. The defenders of slavery included economics, history, religion, legality, social good, and even humanitarianism, to further their arguments. Southerners wanted slavery because that help their economy, but they mistreated slaves really bad. Free slaves faced descrimination and racism. Some slaveholders used harsh punishments-beating,whipping,branding,and other forms of torture-to maintain that control. Harriet Tubman helped many slaves escape to the north with the help of the underground railroad.
4: People were going to the west, some to the south, and some to the north. In the north it was base on industry, the south was base on agriculture ,and the west was unknown or “gold”. By the time Lincoln took office, the nation had split apart over the issue of slavery and was preparing for war.
5: While the republicans were united behind Lincoln, the democrats had split between northern and southern factions. Northerns democrats nominated Stephen Douglass. Southern democrats supported John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. Lincoln won with just 40 % of the votes, all of them cast in the north . for white southerners, the election had unmistakeable message. The south was now minority section south had no longer power over congress.
6: As the war dragged on, Lincoln changed his mind. Declaring an end to slavery, he realized, would discourage Europeans who opposed slavery from assisting the confederacy. On January 1, 1863, president Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. the proclamation, or formal order, declare slaves in all confederate states to be free.
7: Don't think: Look! -Ludwig Wittgenstein | Reconstruction, or rebuilding the south and bringing the southern states back into the union, would not be easy. Reconstruction had two main parts. First, southern states had to create new governments that were loyal to the union and that respected federal authority. Second, slavery had to be abolished once and for all. Freedmen- African Americans who had been set free from slavery 13 amendment - abolish slavery 14 amendment- declare former slaves to be citizens 15- protect the right of Africian Americans to vote
8: There is something of the marvelous in all things of nature. -Aristotle | Business got bigger in part because of new technology and manufacturing practices. As business got bigger, so did the fortunes of those who owned or invested in them. The workers in factories had poor working conditions. For example, there was a tragedy in New York city’s triangle shirtwaist factory, many women died in the fire. The reason why was because the doors were lock, there were no emergency exit, no safety drills, and poor working conditions.
9: Age of steel- railroads owners knew that rails made of steel, were stronger and lasted longer. In 1872, a Scottish immigrant named Andrew Carnegie went to England to study a less expensive method of making steel, invented by Henry Bessemer. Carneige was so impress that he brought the invention to the united states. “steel is king” Electric power-in 1876 Thomas Edison opened an “invention factory” in new jersey. More than any other inventor, he helped turn electricity into an everyday source of light and power. The telephone- invented by a Scottish immigrant named Alexander graham bell. Bell’s invention worked so well that, by 1915, Americans were communicating with one another.
