FC: Measurement: Customary and Metric Systems
Customary System There are two basic systems of measurement. When measuring in these systems, a comparison is made to some unit recognized as a standard. The system used in the United States is called the customary system of measurement. | The units of measure in the customary system are: LENGTH 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in.) 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet 1 yard = 36 inches 1 mile = 1,760 yards 1 mile = 5,280 feet WEIGHT 1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz) 1 ton (T) = 2,000 pounds CAPACITY 1 pint (pt) = 2 cups 1 quart (qt) = 2 pints 1 quart = 4 cups 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts
The other basic system of measurement is called the metric system, or SI (International System of Units). It was first adopted in France and is currently used by approximately 95% of the world's population. | Red- Customary Gray- Metric | Metric System
Relationships Between the Metric System and Customary System | Length: 1 in= 2.54 cm 1 mi= 1.6 km | Capacity: 1 qt= 0.95 L | Weight and Mass 1lb=0.45 kg | Using these relationships, we can convert back and forth between the Metric System and the Customary System.
Converting Units | Convert 5 liters to quarts. -We know that liters is a metric unit, and that quarts are a customary unit, so we are converting from metric to customary. We also know that 1qt= 0.95, so: 5L x 1qt/0.95L= 5.26qt Approximately 5L= 5.26qt Convert 3 miles to kilometers. -We know that miles is customary, and that kilometers are metric, so we are converting from customary to the metric system. We also know that 1mi= 1.6km, so: 3mi x 1.6km/ 1mi= 4.8km Approximately 3mi= 4.8km
