Ancient China many centuries ago was one of the largest and most power full empires there was. It controlled hundreds of miles of land and had millions of people at its hands. Its subliminal success is thought to be caused because of one small aspect China contained. It's military. The increasing numbers of technological advancements leading to the creation of weapons have driven this ancient empire to be many have only dreamed of. This article proves that sometimes force and brutality are the only way.

Ancient China though during its time was in usual peace it had made some of the most impressive military achievements in history starting with the creation of very destructive weapons. Ancient china invented some of the first explosives with a list of hand grenades and rockets. This grenades and rockets were discovered by alchemists after mixing chemicals together and having reactions. It was stated that that was done accidentally. After discovering explosives they created rockets. This was done by filling a bamboo stick with gun powder, and an arrow, when ignited it would fill with gas and propel the arrow at amazing speeds. The Chinese also added poisons chemicals to their grenades. This started the first chemical warfare. Another improvement in Chinese armies was the extensive use of vehicles. For example they used boats for amphibious landings, troop transport, ground bombardment with rockets and vehicles used by messengers to update generals on current battlefield. Chariots were also used but not very frequently due to the rocky landscape in most of china. Only in easy to drive through terrains were they used. Other great achievements were the creation of crossbows, modified version of the bow and arrow, faster and more efficient. Sticking the arrows in a rocket with a round of 6 arrows and lighting them on fire would prove being a deadly weapon. It was much later that rifles and cannons were created. In battle fields there was also the use of hot air balloons, used for war banners and signals to rally men. Another very important achievement was the use of compasses. These compasses were just magnetized spoons but they worked. The other weapons used by the army was basic swords and daggers popularly found during those times.

Warfare is not only about the weapons used in it but also about the strategies and the tactics used to attack, defend and outwit your enemy. Chinas most usual adversary was the Mongols which just pillaged villages and were not formal. The Chinese responded by sending waves of foot soldier followed by Calvary which would harass enemy soldier that were easily slaughtered by the fast moving chariots. The chariots would also flank enemy soldiers and would devastate the enemy. In the back followed the archers, they were not the best fighters but proved to be very effective against exposed infantry. These archers were masters at aiming and from far away took the role of snipers. Other strategies were the use of boats for means of war. Some strategies was merely just placing archers on moving ships and attack troops while others were heavily bombing troops from sea with rockets, some of the first ground assaults from sea. | . Lastly and most basic was the use of amphibian landings on fortifications, a safe way to take troops to a battle field quickly without having to go through land, far more risky. These seaborne operations were easily done due to the large amount of flat lands. But in mountainous areas this was ineffective, boats could be ambushed. Other strategies were the use of banners for attack signals were also used. In conclusion all the new technologies were put to use by applying a strategy to them. But in end all that could be said is that the combination of technology and technology proving that whoever had more technology had better ways of applying them for war.

Other support units are such as vehicles manned by pilots that know how to ride and copilots that know how to repair chariots and drive if the pilot if he is unable to. There were also medics that helped injured soldiers in battlefield to prevent further losses. These were aided by medicines discovered by alchemist, the same that had found the chemical formula for gunpowder. But one can't expect to find only one huge army controlling all these classes. If this worked that way controlling troops would be much too complicated and inefficient. That is why an army would be subdivided into small divisions and legions of troops that would be controlled by sergeants, lieutenant, captains and other high ranking officers that would get direct orders from generals; they themselves would express these orders to their troops so they would know specifically what to do. | Wars are not fought by generals and their technology but by the men which use them. Wars aren't fought by one man but by many. In a fit army there are many different classes that apply different jobs. At the very bottom lie the infantry. They are the back bone of any army filling the role of main foot soldiers. Their job is to do most the fighting. They are the most important and yet so meaningless. Foot soldiers after proving themselves in battle move up rank, a way to prove they have done heroic things in battle and have survived. But an army can't just consist of just foot soldiers; there must also be special support units that have more varied abilities such as archers that use arches from long range to help foot soldiers in the battle field. There are specialist soldiers that knew how to manage rockets and other devices.

A popular event was war between states to prove they were worthy, more like a competition to see who was better. These civil wars waged on for many years without any victor leaving china in disarray. This same system of government would continue for many years. This is also proof of what happens when land is not administered correctly and military power is given to simple families. These civil wars took a heavy toll in human life also because of the increasing number of new military technologies and weapons. It would be much later that a totalitarian government with a vast military strength would bring an end to all this, Qin

China at the time had the largest military in the world with thousands of people at its hands and an increasing number of new weapons it was very well fit for war. But strangely china itself had very little wars or conflicts itself, most of which were actually just civil wars. At the birth of the vast empire centuries ago the empire had just been a simple town of farmers governed by a single king. Soon the town started a small army and started conquering small villages around it, growing larger and larger every day within a few years that same king controlled what most likely is today china. Over the years the vast land was controlled by different rulers until the peace broke out and civil war erupted during the Zhou dynasty, the land that had been conquered through bloodshed had been lost to riots.

Though warfare and brutality isn't one of humanities best friends, it is one of its characteristics, it is unfortunate but true that in the end the only way to make way for empire like the one of China is through war. These people proved that sometimes the only way to success is through a battlefield.

Quiz 1.Who discovered and how did these people discover how to make gun powder? 2.How did Qin prove helpful to china even though he was ruthless and a dictator? 3.How did the new technologies the Chinese found affect us today? 4.
