FC: My Journal

This is my journal. My name is Mary Allerton and I am a pilgrim. I was born in England. My family didn't like it their because the King did not like our religion. We move to Holland to have religious freedom. We didn't like it in Holland so we decided to go travel on the Mayflower to the new world. So my adventure begins.......

Dear Journal, Today we arrived in the New World. William Bradford has been appointed our Governor. We are called the Plymouth Colony. It was very cold and the women need to stay on the boat until the men build houses. I hope my new home is built quickly because the Mayflower, is not where I want to call home.

Dear Journal, Life is difficult here. I have to walk for 1 hour for fresh water each morning. My husband Thomas is working with the other men to build houses for us to live in. I am afraid that it will be too cold to live here. All day I planted some vegetables. It is a full time keeping a fire going. I tend to it all day.

Dear Journal, Today I met some of the people from the New World. My fellow colonists are afraid these "Indians" will try to harm us. I am very afraid. There is no rain. I am afraid that we are going to have nothing to drink. Why did I travel here? It is March and finally our shelter is done. I can't wait to move in, but here is a terrible drought. We are getting very thirsty.

Dear Journal, The drought still continues. Governor Bradford wants a day of fasting for us to sacrifice and pray for rain.

Dear Journal, The Lord answered our prayers. It rained today for the first time in a long time. Governor Bradford declared tomorrow a day of thanks. We will have food for a celebration.

Dear Journal, Life is still hard. Our seeds have not grown well. We are starving and have no food. Lord answer our prayers.

Dear Journal, Our prayers have been answered. Massasoit and his warriors came by today. He helped us plant seeds that will grow in this new world. He is helping us to survive here.

Dear Journal, Today Massasoit and his warriors taught us women how to dry food for the winter. We will not starve. He has been kind to us. I learned about gathering berries to eat, fishing, and the vegetables to plant. I will now change all of my recipes to include these items.

Dear Journal, Thank Goodness that we have made friends with the Indians or Wampanaog. This means "Easterners" . They have helped us so much. It is terrible how they are dying. Governor Bradford designated tomorrow as a day of Thanks and prayer. I will pray for my new friend and harvest all of the newly planted crops and make a special meal.
