 Where I'm From

I am from private schools, Prestigious family members and strict parental guidance. I’m from long dark hair but short ancestors, I am from aunties calls of “beta” and dad’s constant “No you can’ts!” I am from late comings to Saturday night parties With the same giant families I’m from Sunday studying of the Qur’an I am from gosht and naan with meatballs and spaghetti Home smelling like my sister’s baking of cakes and brownies

I am from the crunch crunch of cleats to dirt And one-day tournaments in the blazing sun I’m from “School comes first. No sports until you’re done with your homework.” I am from five older and younger siblings getting good grades or being shunned I am from new technology And funky clothes with unique socks I’m from being the odd one out I am from people that love and care and parental security and doors with locks I am from Humayun Manzoor and Jean Marie Amato

My Mother's Kitchen By: Maliha Manzoor

My mother walks through the door With bags from the grocery store Little sister runs through yelling: “What’s for dinner?! When is dinner?!” “We’re having chicken cutlets and spaghetti,” My mom replies As she is preparing the freshly dead chicken And extra virgin olive oil to fry The water for spaghetti is boiling As the oven is ready for the Texas Toast My mother is hurrying to prepare The best food on the east coast | Finally the dinner is ready For the family to feast Just one more touch At the very least A sprinkle of green parsley Goes on top of the chicken While everyone gathers ‘round Ready to dig in

Mother to Daughter | What are you gonna do with your life?! You can’t just sit around and watch TV all day Go make something of yourself Get out and play I have given you the gift of life Please, I’m begging you Work hard and have fun And always try something new Even though you may have obstacles in your life Overcome them or defeat them You can do it Get up and try again

Don’t make the same mistake I did Don’t just shoot for the stars Jump over the moon and back Go all the way to Mars All I do is nod my head Processing everything she just said I can do this; I know I can Just put one foot in front of the other And believe in myself Thanks for the talk mother

 Ode to GSMST

O’ GSMST How hard we work for you A day of school we fail not to see Even if we have the flu All nighters of studying and homework Throughout the whole year For the rest of our lives Not working as grocery store clerks The best of the best study here Because at their home school, they could not survive GSMST challenges them With new things everyday Work they refuse to condemn Their knowledge increases to an array Of many proportions Losing sleep over the simplest things Because we are all perfectionists Nothing is turned in with distortions Waiting to see what the future brings They refuse to be on the rejection list

O’ GSMST You intimidate them all But once we have broken through thee The triumph is a ball The teachers are fun Although your curriculum is tough The students are better than the rest We work together as one Nothing is enough When you are the best of the best We will never forget you GSMST Once we leave We can agree That what we have achieved Is greater than anything Every class is a new accomplishment When you’ve had a break through Leaving this school is like a bee sting Without it you’ll be in a torment Of a depressing adieu

At this prestigious education zone Wishes are fulfilled and The students are not on their own Grades are a demand From strict parents Students try not to procrastinate But it ends up the opposite way It may not make sense But wait And be amazed

Language Arts | Verb, noun, pronoun, interjection Adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction All important parts of present day Language arts teaches us this way Without language arts we couldn’t function

Analysis This song is one of my favorites. It symbolizes the love that a person has for someone and the things the will do for that particular person.

So take one word you said You put it in your bed You rest your tiny head on your pillow You wonder where you're going next You got your head pushed to my chest and now you're hoping that someone let's you in Well I'll sure let you in You know ill let you in Oh Kelsey, you. | So don't let anyone scare you You know that I'll protect you Always, now through the thick and thin Until the end You better watch it You know you don't cross it because I'm always here for you and I'll be here for you (I know x3) I know how it feels believe me I've been there and (I know x3) I know what it feels like tell me Kelsey | And I'll swim the ocean for you the ocean for you whoa, oh Kelsey and I'll swim the ocean for you the ocean for you whoa, oh Kelsey (i hear you darlin')

Now it's gonna get harder and it's gonna burn brighter and it's gonna feel tougher each and every day so let me say, that i love you you're all I've ever wanted all I've ever dreamed of to come and yes you did come i want you so bad (so bad) can you feel it too? (it too) you know I'm so, I'm so in love with you i want you, so much i need you, so much i need your, i need your, your touch | and I'll swim the ocean for you the ocean for you whoa, oh Kelsey and you never ever let me in (let me in)

It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee-- And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. | I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love-- I and my Annabel Lee-- With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulcher In this kingdom by the sea. | The angels, not half so happy in heaven, Went envying her and me-- Yes!--that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we-- Of many far wiser than we-- And neither the angels in heaven above, Nor the demons down under the sea, Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: | For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee: And so, all the night-tide, I lay down by the side Of my darling--my darling--my life and my bride, In the sepulcher there by the sea-- In her tomb by the sounding sea.
