FC: Scout | To Kill A Mockingbird

Jean Louise Finch A.K.A Scout | My name is Jean Louise Finch, but no one calls me that. They all call me Scout. I have a brother named Jem, and a father named Atticus. I look up to Atticus and he is my role model. In the summer, I spend a lot of my time playing outside with Dill, my neighbor, and Jem. That is, until Calpurnia, our cook, calls us inside. She always seems to know when were up to mischief!

This is me, my brother Jem, and my father, who I call Atticus. I like to sit on his knee in the evenings and read with him. My teacher doesn't like it that I know how to read, but I like it too much to stop. | Atticus says I'm outgoing, which I agree with. He also says that I get into too much trouble, which I don't agree with. I'm just curious, that's all. 'Specially about Boo Radley. He hasn't come out of his house in thirty years!! Dill is always comin' up with plans to get him out of his house.

Jem Finch | This is Jem. He's my brother and about 3 years older than me. Sometimes he thinks I'm a baby, but he's just teasin'. Jem is always second in command during the summer. Sometimes he and Dill leave me out, but I don't think they mean to. Jem is always there to comfort me when I need it, and he's the best big brother ever!

Atticus Finch | My father, Atticus, is the bravest man I know. He defended Tom Robinson, a colored man, in a court case. They lost, but I think Atticus did a great job and they should have won. Lots of mean men tried to talk Atticus out of it, but he stood strong for what he believed in and that's really important.

This is my father, Atticus, and Tom Robinson, the colored man he defended in court. | Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, but I don't know what that means yet. Jem says its bad. I asked Calpurnia, but she wouldn't tell me. I thought Atticus and Tom would win because it was obvious to me that Tom was innocent. They lost though, and it made me mad.

This was when Atticus was outside the jail house the night the men surrounded him | I remember that night Jem said he was going to the jail house. I said he was going to take me with him or not go at all. We didn't start talking until after Dill had come out and we had gotten safely on the sidewalk. I remember Atticus looking like he was in trouble so I jumped in to help. Atticus kept telling me and Jem to leave but i'm secretly glad Jem said no. That was the night I saw Walters dad and decided to beat up Walter. I never really remembered to but I couldnt believe his daddy would do that to mine. Atticus told me never to do that again. I was scared at first, but Mr. Cunningham was real nice and told me he'd say hello to Walter for me.

Broken Pocket Watch | One day while Jem and I were passing the Radley place on our way home from school, we noticed something shiny in the knothole of the tree in their front yard. Jem was real scared at first and didn't want to get it, but I convinced him to. Turned out to be an old broken pocket watch! We don't know who put it there, but a couple days before I found some gum in there. When Jem found out about that he told me to spit it out 'cause it's probably poisoned, but I haven't died yet!

The objects we found in the knothole of the tree at the old Radley place. | Carved Soap Dolls | One day we found two dolls carved out of soap in the knothole. At first I was scared until I remembered there wasn't such thing as hoodooing. We didn't know who they were at first, but then we realized that they looked an awful lot like us.

"'...Atticus, he was real nice...' His hands were under my chin, pulling up the cover, tucking it around me. 'Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.'"(Lee 376).
