BC: Even though social literacy is a new concept it is still important. Social literacy helps students pull together all the aspects of literacy and use them in a way that allows them to communicate with others and voice their own thoughts and opinions. Social networking sites are just one tool that can be used to help students practice the tools necessary to be successful in social literacy. Students will be able to use reading, writing, speaking, and listening all in one.

FC: Social Literacy

1: Definition | the 'literacy' part of our title has taken on meanings that go beyond the simple definition of 'reading and writing'...literacy stands for the know-how and awareness of the first word in expressions ( example :computer literacy) www.unm.edu

2: The definition of literacy has come a long way. The definition given previously about social literacy and literacy in general gives the idea that literacy does not simply mean reading and writing. Due to the new technologies in the world literacy has expanded, and in turn, social literacy has become a key part to life and education. Students need to be knowledgeable about how to be social, especially with literacy. Students should be able to socialize face-to-face, but also online. Online social networking sites have become very popular in the last couple years. Not only are soical newtorking sites fun, but they can also

3: be educational. Using social literacy, whether it be online, during a group project, or simply communicating with a classmate, is very important and helps to practice the basic concepts of literacy as well. Being knowledgeable in social literacy can help improve students awareness of socialization in the classroom as well as how to be social outside of the classroom. Students will become comfortable in voicing their opinions and thoughts. Students can write their ideas and then use their socialization tools to vocalize these opinions. There is more to literacy than simply writing down an idea and publishing it, it's about putting the idea out there for people to see and hear. Students can work on speaking and communication as well as writing and reading when working on social networking sites or practicing social literacy in the classroom.

6: Facebook | Facebook is a social networking site that allows people to connect. You are able to post pictures, statuses, or links to your own page or others on profiles. Events can be created as well and anyone can be invited to these fun or educational events. Profiles can be public or private on facebook depending on the privacy settings set by the user.

7: Facebook can also be useful in the classroom, especially for older students. Students can form classroom groups and connect with each other on an academic level. Students will be able to talk about assignments, upcoming events at school, or any trouble they are experiencing in the class. Professors or teachers can also be a part of these groups so they can answer any questions quickly and easily.. There are also educational applications available to be used by you or posted onto your profile. | www.facebook.com

8: Skype | Skype is a unique social networking site. Skype works by allowing people to have voice communication, such as a phone call, but also face to face communication. You can plug in a microphone to your computer along with a webcam and start your audio conversation or add video. Skype allows for people who live hours apart or across seas to still communicate face to face. In an educational setting Skype is also very helpful. If a student fro one school wants to part of a Spanish program, but his or her school does not have one they can Skype in with a neighboring school who does have one and be part of their classroom.

9: Each school just has to have a screen for each classroom as well as an Internet connection and microphone and the student is able to be part of a classroom across town or in a different town. Skype allows for socialization to happen in the form of speaking and listening aka communication.

10: Twitter | Twitter is one of the newer online social networking sites. Twitter allows people to write their thougts and opinions in a short "Tweet". You can follow anyone and they can also follow you if you allow them to. This is a very useful tool for education in a few ways. One is creating educational groups to connect with people and tweet information to each other. Another useful source is following educational profiles. Educational websites or blogs can create a twitter and create information. The tweets can contain information about meetings, good resources, current news, etc.

11: www.twitter.com | People can follow these twitter accounts to keep up to date. Twitter is easy to use and a great source to gain formation from quickly as well as share information quickly and easily Pictures and videos can also be uploaded to twitter.

12: Youtube | Youtube has become one of the fastest growing social netowrking sites on the web. Youtube allows people to search any type of video to view whether it be an educational video, movie, tv show, or music video. People can also upload and share videos with each other. This is a great way for families to share videos with other family members or friends who may live farther away. There is also an educational youtube like site called teachertube. This is a website where educational videos are posted for teachers and by teachers. Youtube is a great source when looking for news on a topic. Instead of reading a document or trying to listen to audio

13: www.youtube.com www.teachertube.com | a person can actually see a video. For teachers it can be useful to use youtube or teachertube in the classroom so that they can show tutorials to students or show a video that will model for children or show them visuals on a topic or subject.

14: There are many educational benefits to using the Internet or different social networking sites. These videos will help show some of the pros to using the web in the classroom, specifically with the idea of social literacy.

16: Social Literacy is important for students of all ages. There are a wide variety of social networking sites that can be used specifically by younger students. These website are designed for younger children and help them interact with each other in a safe environment. These social networking sites allow students to practice the skills of social literacy-Reading, Writing (Typing), Listening, Speaking
