FC: Pythagorean Theorem!
1: What is the Pythagorean theorem? The theorem that the sum of the squares of the lengths of the sides of a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse!
2: Pythagoras is often described as the worlds first mathematician, but where did it all start? Well, his father was a tradesman named Mnesarchus and his mother was Pythais. Little of his childhood is known but many sources say that he had 2 to 3 brothers. At a young age Pythagoras left home to travel the globe. He went to many places such as, Babylon, Egypt and India. In Egypt though, Pythagoras learned about geometry and realized that if a rope were pegged to the ground in the detentions of 3-4-5, a right triangle would appear!
3: After many years of being cooped up in his home village, Pythagoras left once again for a foreign place. This new home was the isle of Croton. This is where he founded a Cult of men who believed in studying and worshiping mathematics. During this time, Pythagoras would think quite often about the Egyptians that showed him the 3-4-5 rope. Eventually, while drawing in the sand, Pythagoras realized that if a square were drawn off of the sides of each length of the triangle, the legs would add up to the hypotenuse! Thus discovering the Pythagorean theorem!
4: Above this writing is a picture showing you where the legs (A and B) are on a triangle. Below is the Hypotenuse (C) of a triangle.
5: You are driving down the road and see a big billboard right outside your window! The length is about 20 ft and the height is 10 ft. But what is the diagonal of it? On the next page you will find out the answer and how to do it yourself!
6: To find out the length of the Hypotenuse on a triangle you must follow a few steps. First you take the lengths of the legs of your shape (In this case they are 20 and 10). Next, square these two numbers. They are now 100 and 400. Then you must add these numbers to get 500. This number is the hypotenuse squared. Lastly you must find the square root of this number which is 22.36 or 22.4
7: Now you have some paper that you have folded into a small right triangle. You measured that the length is 5 inches and the height is 3 inches, but what about the other one?
8: To figure out the length of the hypotenuse, you must follow the same steps as before. First, square the lengths of the legs (5 and 3) to get 25 and 9. Next, add these numbers to get 34. Lastly you must find the square root of this number which is 5.83!
