3: The Beatles were a famous music group. They first became popular in 1960, and sang songs such as: "We All Live in a Yellow Submarine", "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" and "Ticket to Ride". Today, the have their own video game, Beatles Rock Band. Many people still enjoy their music. In "The Outsiders", Cherry and Marcia like the Beatles but Pony and Johnny preferred Elvis. | http://www.beatlefan.net/

5: The hippie movement was primarily composed of teens and young adults between the ages of 15 and 25. Most of the participants were a result of the baby boom. Hippies supported peace and harmony and did not like war- especially not the U.S. going to Vietnam. 7: On July 16th, 1969, three U.S. men were launched through the atmosphere and touched down on the moon. President Kennedy had expressed concerns the the technology of the Soviet Union was far more advanced than that of the U.S.. He desired to have a man on the moon by the end of the decade, in order to win the space race with the Soviet Union. Neil Armstrong was the first man to every stand on the moon, and said the famous quote,"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". 9: Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Edward White and Robert Chaffee were training on a launch pad when their capsule burst into flames. All 3 astronauts were trapped, and died before anyone was aware of the issue. Because of their death's, NASA redesigned the capsule to be safer and more stable, ensuring that no mare tragedy's would follow.Since capsules and spaceships are filled with wires, etc, that can start fires, a few years earlier a similar tragedy occurred in Russia. 10: Kennedy Dead

11: President Kennedy was riding through the streets of Dallas in an open topped convertible with his wife on November 22nd 1963. Suddenly, 3 shots rang out from a building ahead. Kennedy suffered fatal injuries and died half an hour later. November 25th was declared a day of mourning by Kennedy's replacement, President Johnson, for the funeral. An eternal flame was lit above his grave. This event might of triggered some to the unrest in "The Outsiders".

THe country of Vietnam, in southeast Asia, split into two part- North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was communist, and wanted to endedU.S. support of South Vietnam. Until 1965, the U.S. provide military advisers to South Vietnam and no troops. In 1965, the 1st U.S. troops appeared in Vietnam and they left if 1969, when the war seemed endless. THe conflict was ended in 1975, with a surrender for South Vietnam to North Vietnam.

More than 100 years passed before African Americans were considered equal citizens in the eyes of the law. Martin Luther King Junior was a civil rights leader, and he died in 1963 because of his work and beliefs. This movement was one of the most inspirational and important movements ever to hit the U.S.A., and the bills passed as a result still stand today. Although there isn't much about race in 'The Outsiders", the civil rights movement is still one the the most important events of the 1960s.

17: Martin Luther King Junior was a civil rights movement leader. He supported equal rights for any and all races, and lead peaceful protests against segregation. His most famous speech, "I Have A Dream", was given of the steps of the Lincoln memorial. On April 4th, 1968, King was killed of the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. He came to the city to protest along with some garbage workers. 19: Drive-in movie theaters were very popular in the early 1960s. Most of the time, they were located in rural areas with fewer if cities and suburbs. Patrons could bring there own food and drink and relax while watching a movie with friends. Most drive-in's also had a snack bar. 21: This is the first computer mouse, invented in 1968 by Douglas Endlebart. He won the 1997 Lemelson-MIT Prize for his invention, along with $500,000. Since a cord came out of the end, it was nicknamed the mouse. Endlebart was one of the first inventors to make computers more available to common people, not just scientists.
