1: The Studebaker was the first gasoline powered car. It was a very popular car. The styling consisted of a torpedo front end and rear window. People joked that the car looked like it was going backwards. The company went out of business in 1966. I think that the Studebaker was included in Billy Joel's song because it was being replaced by Ford and GM cars. | Studebaker S

2: Marilyn Monroe was a Golden Globe winning actress, singer, model , and Hollywood icon. She became one of the most popular movie stars in the early 1950s and 1960s. She was known for her sex symbol style and fashion. Marilyn was probably included in the song because she was the most popular actress in 1950. | Marilyn Monroe

3: Liberace was a popular pianist and entertainer, who had his own TV show in the 1950s. He was known for wearing sequined tuxedos and having a candelabrum on his piano. He is credited with advising singer Elvis Presley to also wear "fancy clothes" during his performances. Women adored Liberace, because of his sweet smile and wavy hair. Liberace was included in the song because he contributed to the popularity of television by having his own show which also made him more popular than ever. | Liberace

4: Albert Einstein was a German born physists. His well known for his theory of relativity. He was a great scientist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics in 1921. Einstein is included in the song so that the people can remember all the great accomplishments he achieved in science. | Einstein

5: Brigitte Bardot is a French actress, former fashion model, singer, and an animal rights activist. In the 1950s and 1960s she was known as a sex kitten of the entertainment industry. In 1956, she starred in "And God Created Women", which many people thought that this was her first film. It was actually her eighteenth. The reason she is included in the song is because this movie launched her into overnight stardom. | Bardot

6: Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama on Decembr 1, 1955. She paid her fare and sat in the first row of black seats in the middle section. Parks was arrested when she refused to give up her seat to white passengers. The was the spark that started the Browder V. Gayle trial which brought public bus sergregation to an end. | ALABAMA

7: Thalidomide was sold and prescribed during the late 1950s and early 1960s to pregnant women to prevent morning sickness and help them sleep. From 1956 to 1962, approximately 10,000 children were born with severe malformities, including phocomelia, because their mothers had taken thalidomide during pregnancy. 8: Charles Starkweather was a serial killer who made the news in 1958 because of his gruesome murders. Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Fugate, went on a killing spree of about fifteen people.They were captured and he was executed in 1959. Charles probably started killing because he was made fun of as a child because of his speaking impediment and genu varum which was a leg problem. This was included in the song to show what built up hate can cause. | Stalkweather Homicide

9: The Mafia is a Sicilian secret criminal society. It is also known as Cosa Nostra which means "Our Thing". It is believed that the society first developed in the mid-19th century in Sicily. The reason the Mafia was included in the song is because Cosa Nostra was first used, in the early 1960s, in the United States by Joseph Valachi, a mafioso turned state witness, during the hearings of the McClellan Commission. This started the Mafia "thoughts" in the United States. | MAFIA

10: The assassination of John F. Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, took place on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. He was supposedly shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. The shot to his head was the cause of death. The reason the JFK assassination is included in the song because so many conspiracies were involved. | John F. Kennedy Assassination

11: The construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961. The Berlin Wall was a barrier separating West Berlin from East Berlin and the rest of East Germany. The wall separated East Berlin and West Berlin for 28 years; during this period at least 133 people were confirmed killed trying to cross the Wall into West Berlin. The was included in the song because the wall marked the division and hate between Germany. | Berlin Wall

12: A potent form of the highly addictive drug cocaine called "crack" or "rock" had been rapidly spreading in the United States, especially in troubled neighborhoods. This drug has always been around, but in 1985, it became wide spread because people learned that you could make it out of household cleaners and other easy to get products. | Crack

13: Woodstock | A farmer in the Woodstock area of New York state donated his land for a rock concert. Surprisingly, 600,000 rock fans showed up, making it the biggest rock concert ever held. This was probably included in the song because people really didn't believe that thousands would show.

14: Supporters and staff of U.S. President Richard Nixon were accused of breaking into the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate hotel. Nixon tried to cover up the fact and soon he was forced to resign from office because of the cover up. Several of his staff members were sent to prison as a result of the affair. Watergate was included in the song because Richard Nixon was the first President to resign in office. | Watergate

15: The AIDS virus started to spread throughout the world. People in the United States were becoming aware of this horrible disease. In 1985, the FDA (US) approves the first HIV antibody test. Blood products begin to be tested in the US and Japan. The first International Conference on AIDS is held in Atlanta. US President Ronald Reagan mentions the word "AIDS" in public for the first time in response to a reporters questions on September 17, 1985. Aids was mentioned in the song because the U.S. was publicy intruduced to it around 1985. | AIDS
