3: Steinbeck was born in 1902. He grew up in Salina, California, in a fertile agricultural valley. Steinbeck went to Stanford University in 1919. In 1925 he left without a degree. | Throughout his career, Steinbeck regularly changed courses. He wrote about 28 novels. After he won a Nobel Prize in 192 he died in 1968.
4: The Setting Place: La Paz, Mexico Time: Early 19th Century
5: Kino's people live in a poor village. Everyone lives in a brush house. On the other hand, the doctor lives in a wealthy village.
6: Kino is a young and strong Mexican Indian. His eyes were bright, fierce, and warm. The mustache was thin and coarse. Kino was a husband to Juana and a father to Coyotito.
7: Juana is the mother of Coyotito and wife to Kino. She had dark eyes that resembled little stars. Juana was patient, obedient, respectful, cheerful and strong. | Coyotito is the first born child of Kino and Juana. He was possibly a few months old.
8: Juan Tomas is Kino's brother. He was the eldest of the two. Juan Tomas is husband to Apollonia. They have four childern together.
9: This is Apollonia. She is Juan Tomas' fat wife. A mother of four children.
10: Chapter Summaries Chapter One Kino lives is a brush house with his wife, Juana, and his son, Coyotito. Kino is a poor Mexican Indian. Coyotito, the infant was stung by a scorpion. Kino and Juana made a trip to see the doctor. The doctor refused to see them an so they went back to the town.
11: Chapter Two Kino and his family took his canoe out into the Gulf. This canoe was passed down for generations. While searching for pearls, Kino found the Pearl Of The World in the lat oyster he collected.
12: Chapter Three News of Kino's pearl spread rapidly throughout the town. Kino's planned to sell the pearl, marry Juana in a church, have Coyotito attend school, buy new clothes and a rifle. The priest came to speak to Kino and the doctor came to "examined" Coyotito. Later that night Kino was attacked.
13: Chapter Four Kino and Juana went to La Paz to sell the pearl. The pearl buyers said it was almost worthless. Kino felt he was being cheated, so he left without selling the pearl. He decided to go and sell the pearl at the capital. During the night, Kino was again attacked but this time he was wounded.
14: Chapter Five Juana tried to throw the pearl back into the sea, but Kino stopped her just in time. Kino killed the man that tried to steal the pearl earlier. Someone set the brush house on fire. Kino decided to take his family to a city in the north.
15: Chapter Six Kino and Juana walked all night and rested in a clearing during the day. They were being followed by three trackers. One tracker was on a horse and the other two walked. Kino and Juana fled to the mountains, when Kino noticed the trackers. They took refuge in a shallow cave. Kino stuck upon the trackers while they rested. Kino attacked and killed the trackers quickly. Unfortunately Coyotito was killed when the tracker shot the gun. Kino and Juana returned home and then Kino flung the pearl back into the sea.
16: The Moral The Moral of this story is to be thankful for what you have. Sometimes we want more than we have and that is not always good.
17: The pearl was shiny and pearl to Kino at first but now it is dark and tainted
